I realise this is anathema for many Android fans, who are all about the specs. But the software is what you actually use when you interact with the device. The Nexus is still the best in terms of software, and that will almost certainly continue to be the case until the next Nexus is launched.
I don't know, some of the new software features in TouchWiz are quite impressive. Come on, a scrollable toggle bar!! I agree that looks-wise TouchWiz is crap and boring compared to ICS BUT you honestly can't say that you wouldn't want a few of the new software features from the GS3?!

I had something strange happen on my phone. Landed in dbn from a flight from JHB and when i switched on my phone there was a picture of a large green droid with the word start on top. below the droid was "downloading do not turn off target" nothing happened after a long time so i restarted. anyone seen this?

That's ODIN. It's used to flash ROMS to your device and is activated by pressing Volume down and Power key.

OK thanks, must have pushed those buttons by mistake.

In all honesty I was expecting something more from the S3 event.
After using my Galaxy nexus, my next phone will be a nexus. I love vanilla ICS.
The main reason my next phone will be another nexus...software updates.

I'm tired of waiting for Samsung updates ...
If one gets the Nexus from Vodacom, what firmware will it be on? Will it be on yakjuxw or yakju ? Which is preferable?

I got mine from Vodacom and have yakjuxw I don't think you can buy yakju here.

Ditto, but I've rooted and changed to yakju. So far, so good. Just waiting now for the next update to see if it was worth the bother.
I've read that someone here said OTA updates aren't compatible with clockwork, iirc? Does that mean that if one rooted, you won't receive future updates, but will have to update manually each time?

Is anyone else having problems with video streaming on the nexus? Almost every time I want to check a youtube video out it won't load, just stays at the spinning circle animation. If I reboot my phone and try again immediately on startup the video loads and plays fine. Any idea what the problem could be? Any ideas on how to troubleshoot / debug this problem?

If you have loaded the stock 4.0.4 yakju then you can unroot. This should remove ClockworkMod enabling you to get the OTA's

    Damn, that sucks...
Only reason I rooted was to use DroidWall. I'm wondering if I shouldn't unroot and just be done with it?

Or, the alternative being unroot-update-root each time a new update is available?

Most of the custom ROMS are based on the latest available stock ROM. If you are happy with Droidwall, just update it when a new version becomes available. At least you keep all your settings and data.

Video streaming is fine on my 4.0.4 flashed nexus. Are you trying through 3G or wifi? Only problems I had earlier was my ISP (WA), throttling youtube. Currently on a 7-day MWEB trial and it's working great. I use wifi at home for streaming to capitalise on the uncapped ADSL.

    Okay i need some advice.
Currently have a Desire and its now time to upgrade.

Should i get the Nexus or rather wait for "Next Gen" phones. i.e S3, HTC ONE X/S ?
I really like the look of stock ICS but im also a fan of HTC Sense (thanks to the desire). Do you think R4500 is a good price for the nexus?

Yes, it's a good price. That's what they cost now?
Mine's on contract form Vodacom, but the handset price (in March) was close to 7 grand, 6k8, iirc.
