Default Galaxy Nexus on Market/Play Shop

@ Vulk - to confirm I just got my Galaxy Nexus today. First used it on my MTN SIM and it worked fine, meaning everything loaded fine on the Market/Play Shop. Swapped SIMs to a Vodacom SIM to check after reading this blog and sure as hell I have the issue as you mentioned on Market/Play Shop where it doesn't load correctly so your handset was probably fine ...

In terms of the handset it's great thus far, no complaints. My previous handset was a Motorola Milestone which I enjoyed for the best part of 18 months or so, having tried several mods after eventually sticking to TheFroyoMod 2.5...

As for battery life I will give it a test run and report back in due course ...

What do u guys think about the fact that the Nexus is only available in the 16gb size? 16gb seems a bit puny these days but I guess it depends what one is going to use the device for. Since the screen is 720p capable, it would be nice to have a lot of HD content on there which will obviously fill up the 16gb quite quickly!

This is now my last reservation in deciding to go ahead and get the Nexus...

I copied about 30 ripped CD's with high quality onto the phone and it's used just under 5GB, not sure why you honestly need 32GB let alone 64GB. This seems to be the new selling feature, almost like cameras and megapixels...

I agree, I bought the ipad 64GB. For me a waste and I only full it for the sake of it, 16GB more then enough, espcially for a phone.

Well, that is mp3s that you are storing at 166MB per CD. The Nexus is a 720p device so it would be nice to store a fair amount of 720p content. Whether it's worth watching 720p content on such a small screen, well I don't know about that but it's nice to have the option.

My iPad2 is 16GB and with all the TED videos and other series on there, I have no more space, so i ended up deleting all my music off it to make space. 32GB would be nice for an iPad or 720p capable phone.

At least if the Nexus had a microSD slot then I could always increase storage space that way, but since it doesn't, I'll be stuck with 16GB for the 2 years till end of contract. 16GB may well be sufficient, but it's just nice to have options and not be locked in.

I'll sleep on it and decide in April whether I want to go ahead and get a Nexus. Might as well wait to see what the Galaxy S3 brings to the table as well.

So, I finally got a call from Vodacom. They agreed to give me a brand new Galaxy Nexus, even though I'm now pretty certain there was nothing wrong with the old one. Oh well, I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

The first thing I tried was accessing the Android Market, to see whether the problem with images not loading would happen. And it did. But I also tried using it on WiFi, and then it worked fine. So I'm assuming there's nothing wrong with my phone; the issue must be with my SIM card.

I don't think it's a parental lock - I already asked them to remove it. However, the sales assistant at the Vodacom store suggested that my SIM card might simply be too old. I'm still using my original SIM card from the very first phone I ever got, which was like 13 or 14 years ago. I think it's an 8k or something absurdly old. Although it's never caused problems with any previous phone, it's not unreasonable to think that lead to issues with an HD phone like the Galaxy Nexus.

I'll try upgrading my SIM card to a 64k this week and see whether it fixes the problem. If anyone else has been having this same problem, you might want to try the same thing.

@vulk: I haven't managed to get around to removing my parental lock yet, however I am already using a 64little SIM. Perhaps it takes Vodafone a few days to proceed the lock removal?

Would be interesting to see the difference between a SD and HD downloaded movie, think you'd be able to see the difference? I think I might have some SD and HD Fringe lying around...

Just downloaded 720p trailer for The Hobbit, looks amazing! Have to try more HD!

I'm sure you will be able to tell the diff between SD and HD content on there, but I suppose another factor is the compression used for the content in question. Will it be worth the extra size (400MB vs 1.5gb for an episode of Fringe), perhaps not! But it would be awesome if storage space was not an issue and we could store all the HD content to our hearts content

I'm also getting the issue of images not downloading in the play store. Works fine on Wifi though and never had a problem with my previous android phone using the same sim. I'm pretty sure that Vodacom has some issue on their network.

Please give your support for the image problem in this thread:

Hopefully Vodacom will look into it.

Honestly, I don't mind. People whine about the fact that the GNex doesn't have an SD card slot, but it works better this way. Instead of an expandable storage slot that can only be used for media, I have 16gb that I can use however I want to. No more "low on memory" messages, no more fiddling around with apps2sd, no more worrying about the size of applications that I download. If I see a large app or game that I like, I just download it without having to even think about where it's going to stored. It's absolutely brilliant.

Admittedly, 32gb of internal storage would have been even better. But to put this in perspective, I currently have two seasons of (non-HD) television and around 30 music albums stored on my phone, and I still have more than 3gb of space left over. So I'm not exactly in danger of running out of content.

Also, can I second RoosTa's request that if you've encountered the 3G image bug on Vodacom, to please post on his thread? We really need to pressure them into doing something about this.
