Thread: D-Link DSL-2750U dropping connection frequently. Help please!

Default D-Link DSL-2750U dropping connection frequently. Help please!

    Hi all,

I recently bought a D-Link DSL-2750U. Since then the longest that it has held a connection is 18hours.
I looked at the log on the router and since about 6am until now 5pm it has dropped the connection about 6 times.
4 of those were between 6am and 7am this morning.
I came for a Telkom Mega100WR2 which apparently isn't a great router, however that would no drop for days.

Telkom did check out my line not so long ago and they said there was some corrosion on a junction somewhere.
However I still have a bit of a crackle on my line. Keep in my the telkom router didn't seem to have much issue with the crackle.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Your stats are good, although I find your SNR margins rather low for a 384kbps line, considering that you have such a good (low) line attenuation.

The ADSL will drop if you make an outgoing call or receive an incoming call on a telephone/alarm/fax that doesn't go through a POTS filter, or if the POTS filter is broken.

The first thing that you should do is to ensure that ALL your telephonic devices (fax, telephone, alarm, but not ADSL modem) goes through POTS filters. If you suspect that one of these filters are faulty, simply plug out the device that would go through it and see if your ADSL still drops.

Secondly, if you have a crackle on your telephone line, you should report that to Telkom, instead of reporting a faulty ADSL connection. Once the crackle issue is resolved, your ADSL line should be good again.

If you think that it is the ADSL modem, you could always plug back in your Mega100WR2 and see if it can keep it stable for longer than a week.

    Update (w.r.t your new posts):
Seeing that your SNR margins fluctuate, there is definitely interference on your ADSL line, which might be due to the crackle.
Make sure that your telephonic devices are filtered / unplugged.

Get the line fixed you wont be able to diagnose a problem properly unless you do this
some modems have greater tolerance than others for faults on the line
If it walks like a duck and kwaks like a duck ..its a duck

Thanks guys. I shall first report it as a voice problem to Telkom.
I actually found that the older POTS filters that I received with my Telkom router seem to work better than the ones that came with the D-Link.
I have an alarm and fax machine but the wires are joined somewhere in my roof, can I run that off one POTS filter?

Yes, you can simply plug in a filter before it is split to the fax & alarm. That way you only need 1 filter.

If either of those 2 aren't filtered, then that is most likely the reason why you're having ADSL issues.

Those are filtered luckily. Was just checking to make sure I don't need 2 for some reason.

It could be a faulty modem (heat related). Try another one on the same line.

    PearlJam:
Are you sure its not just your ISP's DNS servers that are faulty?

If your Internet keeps dropping due to DNS issues on your router, then I would suggest that you put the modem in bridge mode and dial the PPPoE connection from your PC instead. If you then still experience DNS issues, then it is NOT related to the modem, but rather ISP related.

Thanks Pada, I will try that just to be sure. I have two accounts and it happens on both whereas I have never had that issue with my previous modem

I have the same issue with my Telkom branded one with firmware AF_1.60_R01. My ISP DNS (MWEB) refuses to work, however when I set it to Google DNS - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - then I am able to surf the net.

Another issue discovered is that the connection will just drop - the link light is on but the internet connection light is off. Only a software reboot or hard reboot fixes this.

My connection is 4096 when connected from wall plug to device. If I use the Wall Plug -> AC adaptor -> Device the connection keeps dropping and cannot connect higher than 3024

Anyone know where else one can download firmware for this device or even the default Telkom firmware?

I've got the exact same issue with my DSL-2750U. Ran the router for 7 days and kept getting drops in connection and eventually reverted to a test DSL-2500U router which worked like a charm.

I took mine back to Pinnacle and they had the same issues in testing and replaced it with a new one.
I get home last night, replace my router with the new one and go out. Get up this morning and the connection had died after less than 2 hours.

D-link SA ftp server is not displaying for me on IE, Firefox, Chrome and Filezilla so I cannot get another firmware.
Emailed their Technical Supervisor directly to see if he can send me another firmware or something. Really frustrating this issue as I'm not around to keep resetting the router to establish a connection again...

When I emailed D-Link on Tuesday, they replied that they are unaware of an issue with the specific router model or it's firmware version. Wonder if Pinnacle will give me my money back and I can just go buy a Netgear or Linksys or something that works...

DLink SA must know about the issue, if this doesn't stand out to them as an issue then I suppose their other products are worse!
