Thread: Microsoft is becoming a gaming powerhouse

  1. #1

Default Microsoft is becoming a gaming powerhouse

Microsoft to become a gaming powerhouse

Once praised for their ability to innovate in all spheres of technology, Microsoft seems to be unwittingly steering towards a stronger future in hardcore gaming. That’s not such a bad thing however.

    "Silverlight failed against Flash."

You are truly f#cking cluesless !!! xBox and Windows Phone are based on XAML which is the foundation of Silverlight. Where do you do your research ?

Kinect was awesome... the first time I played it, but the novelty wore off very quickly.

using your own product doesn't mean that the rest of the market has accepted it.

Huh? Amazon EC2 and Google AppEngine are two vastly different technologies. This all sounds like made up words to make up an article.

Yes ,but can you run XBOX and Windows Phone in a browser?

You insult yourself with your profanity. Of course Silverlight has failed against Flash. The context is internet applications because that's flash's platform. See http://www.statowl.com/custom_ria_ma...enetration.php

Silverlight is a graphical user interface engine, not an operating system for Windows Phone or XBOX.

What's XAML (XML really) got do with the argument against Flash? I mean MSXML (XML really), which is the basis for Actionscript, is the basis for Flash which is also a winner. So XML is the winner!! (kidding)

If I followed your argument, I could say Android beats Silverlight (AND Flash for that matter) because there are way more Android phones there are Windows phones and Flash phones (of course, there ARE NO flash phones, duh!). And Silverlight doesn't even run on Android (without downloading some obscure plugin)...wheras all Android devices play flash out the box. I might have shot myself in the foot with this argument though because Apple devices don't play flash but thats not becasue it CAN'T its because Steve Jobs was boycotting Flash. Be that as it may, there are more Android phones than Windows phones, so I would say silverlight is loser

See how stupid your reasoning is...its based on the number of devices it can be deployed on (and can run on it)

Your argument that Silverlight is the trump card for Windows Phones might be blown out the water if you look at articles like this: http://www.i-programmer.info/profess...lverlight.html

Before you say I'm clueless too, for the record, I'm a senior .NET software dev of 7 years. Actually I hope to see Flash die in the next couple of years with the advent of HTML5 and CSS3. As it is libraries like jQuery can do so much that Flash (and silverlight) can do on any browser on any platform.

Regarding XBox I think its brilliant. Beats any media center there is out there.
Related to XBOX, I've just finished building and XBMC system on a Linux platform (not sure how thats related to XBOX. Then again...Microsoft didn't develop XMBC...but I degress

Of all the many well-reasoned arguments that can be made against some of the points in Andrew's article, this isn't one of them.

Flash and Silverlight and not comparable either. Flash originated with animation in mind. Silverlight was built for rich web applications. If you really want to compare apples to apples, you should compare Silverlight and Flex (Flex is the rich-web application framework Adobe made to run on top of flash) or even Adobe AIR. In that case I'm not sure, but I would think that Flex and AIR don't have that big a user base. In either case, Adobe announced that Flash for mobile won't be developed anymore, so I would think it would be fair to say Silverlight triumphed over Flash.
