Thread: Cybersmart Why Grow-for-life is a good idea gone very bad.

Unhappy Cybersmart Why Grow-for-life is a good idea gone very bad.

Cybersmart Why Grow-for-life is a good idea gone very bad:

Some time ago, I was looking at Cybersmart's most unique offering:
Grow-for-Life, which gives you extra data for every day you stay
on with them, and the amount your cap increases by is dependent on
how long you've been a member. The cost for this service is R19 per
    month.

While this is a great concept, it wasn't thought out very well in terms
of value (Due to the relatively high monthly fee and unfair T's & C's).

Let's use the best case "Worked Example" to show you what I mean:

You have been with Cybersmart for at least two years and you decide you are
going to subscribe to Grow For Life and you have subscribed to a 1 GIG One
    Price service.

Your cap will Grow by 3 Mb per day for life. This means that after 1 month,
you cap will have grown to roughly 1.1 Gigs and after a year your cap will
have Grown to 2 Gigs i.e. double your initial cap.

Now for the worked example: for simplicity's sake let's assume there are
    30-days in a month.

You sign up for the Grow-for-Life service for 3 years:

    Month 1, you get 90MB at R19
    Month 2, you get 180MB at R19
    Month 3, you get 270MB at R19
    Month 4, you get 360MB at R19
    Month 5, you get 450MB at R19
    Month 6, you get 540MB at R19
    Month 7, you get 630MB at R19
    Month 8, you get 720MB at R19
    Month 9, you get 810MB at R19
    Month 10, you get 900MB at R19
    Month 11, you get 990MB at R19
    Month 12, you get 1080MB at R19
    --------------------------------
    After 1 Year, you've "earned a total
    of 7020MB/6.85GB and it's actually
cost you R228 or R33.28 per GB

    --------------------------------
    Month 13, you get 1170MB at R19
    Month 14, you get 1260MB at R19
    Month 15, you get 1350MB at R19
    Month 16, you get 1440MB at R19
    Month 17, you get 1530MB at R19
    Month 18, you get 1620MB at R19
    Month 19, you get 1710MB at R19
    Month 20, you get 1800MB at R19
    Month 21, you get 1890MB at R19
    Month 22, you get 1980MB at R19
    Month 23, you get 2070MB at R19
    Month 24, you get 2160MB at R19
    --------------------------------
    After 2 Years, you've "earned a total
    of 27000MB/26.36GB and it's actually
cost you R456 or R17.29 per GB

    --------------------------------
Now on paper, it's starting to look
    worthwhile, but remember, it's Feb
    2014, and broadband prices have
    dropped substantially. (Speculation
of course but pretty darn accurate
I'm sure) Another thing to note is
    you've only progressed from a 1GB
monthly cap up to about 3GB.
    --------------------------------
    Month 25, you get 2250MB at R19
    Month 26, you get 2340MB at R19
    Month 27, you get 2430MB at R19
    Month 28, you get 2520MB at R19
    Month 29, you get 2610MB at R19
    Month 30, you get 2700MB at R19
    Month 31, you get 2790MB at R19
    Month 32, you get 2880MB at R19
    Month 33, you get 2970MB at R19
    Month 34, you get 3060MB at R19
    Month 35, you get 3150MB at R19
    Month 36, you get 3240MB at R19
    --------------------------------
    After 3 Years, you've "earned a total
    of 59940MB/58.54GB and it's actually
cost you R684 or R11.68 per GB

    --------------------------------

    It's now February 2015, and all that's happened is, you've bought 58.54GB for R684,
and you've increased your monthly cap to just over 4GB .

In summary, if you need more data, just buy a damn Topup instead of trying to be clever.

I hope I haven't bored you guys to tears, I just felt that Cybersmart users should
be aware of how Cybersmart is trying to rip them of. I'm not even going to go into
the concept of the Giggy bank, but essentially, the same applies.

Night Rider is the only thing that actually makes any sense!

Maybe it is time for Cybersmart, (like most other ISP's) to revisit their product offerings.

My thoughts exactly. The idea behind this thread is to try and give Cybersmart some constructive criticism. With the huge drop in ADSL data prices, Grow-For-Life would only be worthwhile again if:
    1. Your ADSL Cap is increased by at least 6MB per day instead of 3MB.
    2. Your ADSL Circuit doesn't have to be with Cybersmart to qualify for Grow-for-Life.

Like I said in the beginning, Grow-For-Life is a great concept, it's just that it's an old product which has become severely overpriced over the years.

Night-Rider will never age, because it's value increases as the price of ADSL Data decreases (More for your money).

The Giggy Bank has also aged, since a 1GB Giggy Bank costs R21pm (More than what it costs to just buy an extra GB from most ISP's) Even the "Unlimited Giggy Bank" seems overpriced. Maybe R9 for the 1GB Giggy and R29 for the Unlimited Giggy would be more fair?

Cybersmart has phoned to offer me 10GB Data for R99pm on numerous occasions. To me this is a good price, so why are they still charging exorbitant prices for the addons?

It's also ridiculous to withhold services from clients who would rather not move their ADSL lines away from Telkom.
