There are many standalone players/streamers such as TviX, Popcorn Hour, WDTV HD Media Player, Boxee, Xtreamer, PS3, XBOX 360, iPad, HDTVs that can playback H264 and AAC encapsulated in MP4.

I'm guessing to ensure maximum compatibility across most devices for SD releases.

No, you're misunderstanding. Look, most of the devices out there can play x264/MKV. They just chose this mp4 container so that in case there are devices that can't play MKV, at least those peeps will be able to play mp4. IOW, more devices supports mp4 than MKV.

I had a MKV movie (was about 6GB) and I was trying to play it on a Sony LCD using the built-in media player on the TV.

First of all the TV cant pick up a NTFS partition, so I had to change it to FAT32. Then I couldnt copy the movie on...

I found a app that I could "tweak" the MKV file. It basically changes the container to MP4, no recoding. Takes about 10 sec for a 6GB file. I enabled the 4GB limit and it split the file for me.

Plugged that in and I was a for away... So the TV can play the x264 codex, just doesnt like the MKV container.

One would think that the tv manufacturers would do something about that.....

You seem to know a lot about scene releases. Can you please explain to me why, when they rip 720p shows they use 1280x720 but when they rip movies they dont use the full res... its always like 1280x5xx or something like that

That has more to do with the aspect ratio that the movie was filmed in.

That is because Sony sucks when it comes to anything like that i.e. MKV support.

If they did, they would kill of the media player market altogether.

No. MKV (HD content) is staying as is.

Correct. Those groups who don't want to change, will be banned. There are already two very popular groups that don't want to change and they will be banned from "trading". Those groups are 2hd and fqm. Very sad, because their stuff is of good quality.
