The DA wants struggle hero Mamphela Ramphele to join the party and possibly succeed Helen Zille as its leader, media reported on Sunday.

Zille had been asking Ramphele "for years" to join the DA, City Press and Rapport reported.

"Obviously we'd really like to have her in the party. There are things we see eye to eye on. She now has this message of active citizenry and this resonates with us," City Press reported a DA source as saying.

Zille declined to comment but DA federal chairman James Selfe said he knew nothing about overtures to Ramphele.

Ramphele told the City Press she had never, in her 42 years as an active citizen, joined a political party.

She said she saw herself as a change agent for appropriate transformation.

I think she would be excellent for the position of DA leader.

It seems Zille feels she can just instal people into leadership positions in the DA. Surely there is a process within the DA for electing leadership?

Interesting, I thought Ramphele's views were more aligned with ANC policies and I also thought she was an inactive member of the ANC. She's a beneficiary of BEE, don't supporters of DA despise BEE and AA?

The DA's supporters by default support BBBEE and AA as they are policies of the DA...

Watch the cANCer snap her up now!
She'd never join the ANC - her outspokenness against corruption and insistence on a culture of excellence are in conflict with the ANC tolerance of the same maladies. If the ANC thought her malleable they'd have appointed her to the SABC board as chairman.

I think she's better as a civil society activist like she is now. She is tremendously qualified, enough to make a great president for this country but politics is a dirty game that might muddy even her.

What does it say about the da.Don't they have any decent leaders in the party?

What does this comment say about you?

The DA want a better future for all. Race and creed has got nothing to do with good leadership. I'd support the ANC if they weren't so corrupt and brought every single person in this country together. A unified South Africa.

I was thinking the same thing, so much for a society based on merit and all of that.

They have good leadership but lack the mass credibility required to change their positioning from 'white' and 'elitist' quickly enough, even though they do not stand for either. It would take high profile individuals who already have street cred to move into the party and bring this cred with them.

I didn't read anything there discussing the process itself. She's basically saying that she'd love to have her in her party as she sees her as an asset with aligned political viewpoints. Not sure how you can start digging negatives into that sort of statement, unless you feel that indoctrination and subservience should play some sort of role...

The white supporters dislike it for obvious reasons, but the DA policy itself underlies that its needed for transformation. I just dont think the DA like how AA is managed atm.

Yes, just like there was for Lindiwe. While Helen nominated her... the caucuses still vote. As per usual. I wonder if this will go down like the Lindiwe vote. Where most of the white members voted for Lindiwe and most of the black members voted for Athol :D

Perhaps it just means that they appreciate integrity. Something that cannot be said about the ANC who have all the leaders in feathering their own nests.

In any event, even if the DA did manage to pull someone of her calibre, it would be to no avail because the populist vote does not appear to embrace the notions of the old guard, only the venal grasping of the new order.

You mean like the process at an ANC National Conference where ~4000 ANC members effectively vote for the next president of the country? I can see how that is much more democratic.
