I took out a new contract with MTN Direct. They delivered the phone on Friday. I activated the new SIM on Friday as well but when I try to use it I am told it is RICA barred and I should visit my nearest store.

Do they not RICA it when the contract is opened? I had to supply a copy of my ID as well as proof of address, so why do I now need to visit their store still. When I opened my Vodacom contract (through Vodacom Direct) they RICA'd it automatically.

maybe they just just haven't open the line, happend to me the other day the blocked the line because payment hadn't reflected but i get the message its blocked because I didn't Rica. their auto message isn't set up correctly.

legally they not allowed to sell a new sim if you dont provide information required for rica

I'll check it again later and maybe go in by one of their stores on the weekend if it's still not right.

So nobody else can confirm whether or not they needed to RICA separately after taking out a contract with MTN Direct???

If you submitted the docs then they should have RICAd for you.

Call in the morning when MTN direct is open.

It's still not RICA'd. I haven't had a chance to call them yet but will try to do it this week. Strange enough, I receive SMSes from MTN still. But I don't even know what my number is yet.

You need to take it to a store to Rica.

I've taken two contracts with them, the first one was shortly after Rica was implemented and they Rica it with the docs I gave them. The second one a couple of months later they said they could not Rica it because it's a face to face process so I need to visit a store.

I'm guessing they got a slap on the wrists for doing it the way they initially did.

I applied for 2 contracts fro MTN direct in the last 4 months. Both lines were opened on midnight of the days I received my deliveries. I only sent the RICA documents with the delivery company.

MTN is useless. I woke up one morning and got that same Rica message when I tried to use my phone. Turned out it was nothing to do with Rica, and their billing was just crapping out (which you should be prepared to fight with for the next 2 years).

dial *131*4# on your phone to confirm if the sim has been RICA'd
Doesn't work. Just tells me it has timed out.

Fortunately I only took this contract for the phone. My SO lost her Galaxy Gio and a replacement was R1700. Got one on MTN top up for R49 a month with R50 airtime, which comes to significantly less over 24 months. So I'm not too stressed about the SIM not being active yet. But certainly doesn't speak much for MTN's service.

Tragic, next time go with another network.
Hint: they're all terrible.
