This stupid swear word filter!

So I sent a friend a PM and tried to type * S N I G G E R *

and it ends up as *s*******

Can't you guys put a disclaimer or something in your T&C's requiring 16 years of age and drop the filter, honestly, we're not children!

A lot of the banter on MyBB (even outside of TK) is well beyond something you'd let children read/talka bout but oh no, swear words must be blocked, yet suggestive as fsck (see what I did there) themes are OK?!

Yeah, I know this has been brought up before but the filter is just silly.

Failing that, please allow users to turn it off on an individual basis!

This site has an age restriction of 18. You have an age restriction, or a swear filter, not both - that's just silly

Sure people that swear excessively and/or offensively should be warned, keep things reasonable of course.

I agree on the one side. It is annoying when you type out a word which unfortunately contains a blacklisted phrase and you end up ||||||| yourself.

On the other side, this is primarily a tech forum. You shouldn't have to S N I G G E R on a tech forum
What should be mentioned as well is that this is also a public forum... you don't need to register to view threads and as such that might be one reason why the filter is set as it is.

Sure, it's a public forum and the site renders the page from a sql db which surely means we can have an opt in/out filter.

Everyone knows what it means if one days: "Telkom ****ed up my ADSL line, again!" it doesn't require any imagination yet the word is starred out? It's like.. yes, we all know that nasty, evil word I've used but please, nobody let me actually see it!

I think that together with making the Mods' work load higher to remove "very" offensive words.
