    Default Kept Marine

I would have a hard time keeping anything else. Marines are great. Catching was the best part of the hobby. Had a 2M tank, have kept a few different fish, but favourites were Moorish, Madagascarensis, Lunula, Clowns, etc. Gave it up when the kids got old enough to tap on the glass...

Carting 180l of water a week from the aquarium got a bit much too!

Keeping water 100% is not easy - as anyone who has done this knows. Tricks I learned were: Get cheap calcium carbonate from the Chemist (sometimes pool shops keep) to keep the kh up - as you know, good Kh is essential to buffer the PH knocks. Jobert plenum system is probably the best for long term success, but not easy! LOTS of substrate required. Met some guys who dug huge holes in their back yard and buried huge water tanks to keep the ph shocks to a minimum, but that's a bit extreme I reckon. Tried growing mangroves in the filter with little success. Had power heads with protein skimmer in drip filter, but not easy... needs lots of money otherwise can be frustrating.

Imagine trying to simulate the ocean in a few thousand litres of water...

That is a fact. I had a marine tank in Richardsbay! Had a stressing job and worked long hours. Can get home fuming and ten minutes later were as calm as anything. Marine fish were the best as they never act the same, I was always surprised at their antics! Clowns in a Anemone and a blenny peeping in an out of holes, Puffer fish floating around! etc

The fresh water Oscars and Goldfish never gave me the same pleasure. Too docile! My wife hated it when I threw in some fresh water guppies from the lake to be feast on. She thought I was cruel! The first time I threw in a whole lot, probably close to a hundred, and was shocked to see them chomped up in no time, Apparently I could have lost them Oscars due to indigestion, they looked like rollers when they were done!

I would like to have a salt water tank, but as my parents dont want the thing somewhere in the house il have to keep it in my room.
So i would have to get a smallish one.

How would i go about getting started and what are the ave costs involved?
Prob about a metre long tank will do for now.

I absolutely love sea water tanks and the beauty of the fish, can watch them for hours.

Hehe i remember taking my gf to a restaurant and they had a tank in there, and at the end of the eve she said we are never going back cos i spent the whole night just staring at the tank.
