Sarkozy seems to be making an issue out of halal meat- but I'm curiousThe phoney war over halal meat erupted in February when Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right Front National, claimed consumers were eating halal unknowingly.
In SA, is it obligatory to mark meat for sale in supermarkets and restaurants as halal if it is indeed so ?

I would assume that if the halal food was sold alongside non-halal food, then it would be marked so that Muslim faithful could identify it as so, much like kosher foods are labeled for the same reason. If the store sells only halal food, then labels are probably not required as the assumption would be that it is halal. Same with restaurants that carry a halal certification.
As far as government regulations, there is no requirement beyond being able to track back which butchery and abattoir it comes through. Method of slaughter doesn't interest them as long as it is sanitary.
And I agree with the people interviewed in the Guardian, Sarkozy is trying to stir up a storm to hide the real faults in his government.
So for example, if I go to the Spur the only meat I could get would be halaal ?

The real WTF is that "he announced it was "the issue that most preoccupies the French". If that's what he feels, he's more out of touch than Marie Antoinette.
I don't think it's obligatory, but as companies pay for the right to be accredited, I would assume most of them would. Also since non-halal meat is the majority, a distributor would want it marked in order for Muslim people to be able to identify it.
Disclaimer: Being vegetarian, this is a non-issue for me & I may just be blowing smoke out my bottom.

Only some spurs are halaal, these branches dont serve pork... only beef ribs, muslims are missing out.
Why is it an issue that he wants the meat labelled? Thst would make it easier for muslims too.

You will find most big name takeaways in this country are now "halaal"... drives me bloody dilly actually. I would love to get a burger with bacon from a McD's or something.. but no such luck.
No amount of "halaalising" is going to change KFC to anything other than hormone growth injected, fatty, c-grade spawn of the devil excuse for chicken. :-)

Rainbow, Goldi, Early Bird etc are all Hallaal.
KFC, Kuai, CTFM and Mcdees are all Hallaal.
Alot of the upmarket restaurants use Karan Beef as their main supplier because of the quality and supply of the meat, all Karan Beef is Hallaal, so theres a big chance that your local Spur, Dros etc apart from the pork, might be Hallaal.
So essentially if you don't want halaal products you are kinda stuffed.
Unless you go straight to a butcher.
