It will depend on the size of your geyser, but a 300liter geyser will generally have a 3-4kW element.

sounds about right: 3kW for an hour is 3kWh is 3 units

If you want to save, make sure the geyser temperature is set between 46 and 55C and insulate the pipes coming from the geyser to the taps

Also insulate the geyser.... they can lose a heck of a lot of energy if they're not insulated.

The geysers shouldn't run constantly. If you're seeing that they do, then you probably need to get them checked out/look at leakage somewhere that causes cold water to be poured in constantly etc.

You might want to also look at your hot water usage habits. If you shower/bath now, and your SO does so an hour or 2 later, and then an hour or 2 later your kids do, then you'd be using significantly more electricity than you would if the hot water usage was successive (meaning you take a shower, then her, then the kids, all in a span of about an hour)

Following the insulation of your geyser (I believe geyser blankets), you might want to invest R1400 in a timer for the geyser (the R1400 usually includes the geyser blanket with a very upscale timing unit connected to the geyser showing how hot it is etc, don't buy into those monthly installment **** they peddle door to door)

You can then set the geysers to turn on at specific times of day and be off the rest of the time, and also be able to control the temperature without climbing into your roof each time to adjust the thermostat.

That should save you quite a bit of money in electricity.

Also consider getting solar heating. There's a rebate from Eskom that helps a bit and considering your R3k a month bill, you'd be paying it off within a year with the savings it can bring.

How did you measure this? Did the consumption stop after a few hours?
