Thread: Neotel Fiber NeoBroadband down in Cape Town

  1. #1

Default Neotel Fiber NeoBroadband down in Cape Town

Down in Cape Town and George - ADSL is far more reliable than NeoFail
ADSL - 1 failure this year
Neotel - 10 failures this year

This was a first in 6 months for us. I've found their technicians to be thorough and detailed in their answers, albeit not as fast as I'd hope. But at least they don't just try to sweep problems under the rug like many operators do.

This feels like it must've been a fairly traumatic outage, we couldn't even get through to their support numbers. I'm sure an explanation will follow... let's hope it's not "a power surge" - an awful lot of those recently

    Does anyone know what happened?

You are very fortunate, this year has been a disaster with the outages.

Latency from George to Cape Town Access Switch = 9.5 ms (6 months)
3 weeks ago we started getting latency 33 then 23, then 17 ms, now its down
    to 7.2ms

They had a cable break and forgot to switch us back from the "protection path" to the "main path".
I spent many hours on the phone, had the local Neotel FST (Field service technician) there
and eventually somebody in IPNOC checked back on a previous resolution to a previous call and their
latency fixed it came right. (pulling hair out).
They then also put us on the wrong VLAN tag ......
High packet loss, low latency - due to contention ratio

First frustrating support call was the poor international traffic , excellent local speeds.
I used the Vodafone Speedtest Server in Newbery UK as a benchmark for international testing.

    Said too much

When it works it works well, but have a backup provider.

Higher than normal latency with packet loss this morning
Reason for the above , aftermath of yesterdays problem
We have a major outage going on for Belleville pop In Cape Town.

NeoInternet 1:1 guaranteed international on business sla nogals - we've been completely down now for 18hrs+

Can't wait to see the IR and RCA Tuesday... Especially considering we're litterally days away from signing contracts for close to 500k pm worth of additional services.

From what I've heard - they had an massive hardware failure and customers was migrated one by one to new hardware. Most are back online, but it seems that there is still a handfull of circuits down.

As from 04h30am on 7th April 2012 Saturday morning our latency is back top normal of 7.2ms
We are obviously back on the "main path"
