Thread: WP behaviour questions

    Default WP behaviour questions

My upgrade is due soon and I'm mightily tempted by the Nokia 800. I already have an iOS device and an Android, so I'm curious to see what Windows Phone is like but don't have a realistic chance of seeing one in real life so need to ask two questions here.

Firstly, does the screen dim just before WP goes into sleep mode and, if so, what happens when you tap it in that state? The iPhone just brightens the screen, whereas Android reacts to wherever you tap and brightens the screen.

Secondly, I know there is only limited multitasking, but what happens when you are using navigation packages and a call comes in? If you take it, does navigation close down and then have to be physically restarted?

The multi-tasking works exactly like the iOS devices, it only suspends the application to the background. Once you're done on the call and go back to the navigation it will resume from where you left off.

Thanks, quite comfortable with the way it works on iOS. Do you physically have to restart navigation after the call or will it do so automatically?

    It'll do so automatically

Yeah the multitasking - fake or not - is handled very well, and apps resume instantly.
If you get a call, you will have no idea that the app or game was suspended.
I just tested and if when the screen dims if you tap it it brightens the screen and clicks where you pressed. I've never actually noticed this as I instinctively do a quick 'swipe' to undim it.

    Any other questions?

Yes, actually. Does Bing work any better under WP than under iOS? I downloaded the iOS version and, while I liked the Metro style interface a lot, it didn't seem able to find anything where I was or to give me directions to anywhere.

Are you meaning the business search(local scout) or mapping?
Local Scout does not work locally unfortunately, but am told that it will get here eventually.
Mapping works well, and turn by turn directions are good. Occasionally it will not find the address depending on how you type it.
However remember that the Lumias come with brilliant turn by turn navigation and standard maps.

I'm upgrading to a Lumia 800 today... cannot wait
So many people told me to rather go with the Galaxy S2 and I've actually considered. But the fanboy in me want to give Nokia one more chance. Besides, I loved the N9 when I played around with it but doomed OS naw, and then came the L800 and I played around with it and liked it alot aswell, surprisingly coz I hated Nokia for bailing on Meego.

    Awesome!
Remember, the first thing you must do is plug it into your PC/Mac and it should prompt you to install Zune. Install it, and update the phone. They may still be shipping it without the battery update.
Second thing you must do is tap the marketplace icon, and type "roguecode" ;-)
