Thread: Raspberry Pi as in-car entertainment system

Question Raspberry Pi as in-car entertainment system

    Hi guys

Would like to get your thoughts on this. In theory, I don't see why it would not work having the Raspberry Pi as a media server, lets say with a wifi dongle and controlled from your smart phone? I guess it is irrellevant if it is in-car or just around the house, the concept remains the same. It would be easy to plumb it into any existing audio system.

Yep, could even watch movies from it (in car or at home).

It will be easy if your current Audio system has an AUX in.

Quite a few ways of doing it.

It does, which is why I was thinking of this. Any idea when the Pi will be available here? I honestly haven't been following its developement, it just occured to me this morning while I was writing (yet another) new mp3 disk for the car.

They have only just started shipping to the UK, I expect it will be another month at least.

Its going to be quite a wait still I would assume, they first need to get it certified and then fill all the preorders so maybe next year it will be readily available(especially with all the hype).

It has a few options for touch screen and I think it will be great with one of the car pc OS's.

I'm hoping a few other small cheap pc boards become available so there is more options.

It has long since passed the certification tests so that is not an issue any more, as reported.

    Back-orders however, are.

Sounds like a great idea to do this, just one thing to note, if your taking that signal from the chip, thats an amplified signal which in turn your going to plug it into a amplifier which distorts the signal.
I would recommend getting one of those converters, from a Amplified signal to a pre-amp signal, then you would have great audio quality.

EDIT: I see some have shipped, but I still think its going to be a few months to go...

ce mark is on the packaging..nowhere on the pi itself. maybe they change the silkscreen at some point, but for now they are shipping as is to people.

it'll work fine in a car, sort out your audio levels, sort out some androip app to control the media player (already done...mpd...). job done.

if you cant do it in an afternoon you need serious help.

How is this project going? I got mine two days ago and I am not sure what my first little task will be.

    Ps. after building a case.

I was also thinking about this idea, but when i googled if the PI can take a wifi dongle i got mixed results... and then i also realised that wouldnt you need a router to connect the 2 devices? or maybe for your phone to be rooted?

Most wifi dongles (at least mine) can act as a AP, so no router needed and if not you can just setup an adhock connection.

I really thought about this and decided it would be easier to buy a Sony deck with Bluetooth. +/- R1800
