How any remember the icy chill that ran down your spine the evening SABC TV was interrupted by PW Botha looming before us, announcing a State of Emergency had been declared.
I sat wondering what did this mean, what now, not realizing that in due course the country's military apparatus was to be used against it's own people.
The State of Emergency was (I believe) a turning point in the future of the country.
It seemed emigration rates spiraled & the fight for democracy intensified.
Many people gormless to the situation of the day were jolted into reality by the images of armed military vehicles, only before used on "our" borders, now suddenly inside our townships.
