We used to switch the tv on at about 15:00 and watch the time while listening to Radio 2000. My sister and I used to take shifts and we would make sure someone was watching the countdown at every moment during that hour.
At exactly 15:55 the shout of "TV IS ON!!" would echo through the house and we would rush to watch the last five minutes count down before the exciting 1 hour lineup of kids tv would start.
The English nights used to be our favorite since nothing was dubbed. I grew up in a fully bilingual home so the language wasn't the issue, it was the incredible voice acting that put us off.
But we watched anyway. Knersis en Oscar, Die Skim, Tarzan, Liewe Heksie, Hass Das se nuus kas, wielie waalie, pumpkin patch, brakenjan whatever was on we watched.
The most diabolical and harsh punishment that could have been handed out was a night without tv. And when our tv broke so badly that it only showed green and had no sound, we watched the tv in green without sound and when there was simulcast shows we where ecstatic!
We used to live for 7 o clock when the series would start. Airwolf, Macgyver, Magnum PI and the A-Team where my favorite shows and missing an episode was devastating. Bedtime was heralded by the start of the 8 o'clock news.
Sundays where the WORST. Nothing but KERK. It was a good time to get that homework done tho.
