Port Elizabeth among Afcon hosts next year

Port Elizabeth has been announced as one of the host cities for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The announcement was made by Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, this morning.

Joining Port Elizabeth as host cities for the Afcon matches are Mbombela, Rustenburg and eThekwini, with Soccer City in Johannesburg set to hold the opening and closing ceremonies. Polokwane, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town were selected to stage the 2014 African Nations Championships (Chan) football tournaments.matches.

The venues were approved by Cabinet after a meeting on Thursday. The sports ministry will meet the SA Football Association next week to finalise the budgets for the tournaments.

Really glad about this. Does anyone know the actual situation with Soccer City? To me it seems like it will host the opening and closing ceremonies, but no matches. I know the Olympics does this and the Cricket World Cup has a seperate opening, but it seems starnge for a football event.

I'll be there for the PE matches though.

I know what you mean, I was in JHB for 5 days now, from the moment I step off the Plane to when I get back to PE I hate being there. Far too busy for me! I will rather work here and earn less money, and at least enjoy my life!
