Is VLC even legal in the US?

I remember the whole DESS crap happening there, and the fact that watching DVD's on Linux is against US law as you download the illegal codecs to enable you do to so. This is in part the reason Microsoft started shipping with the decoder as part of the OS and by that covering the users license fees for them.

Edit: Ok DeCSS was the one that was tested in court and is totally illegal.
libdvdcss (which VLC use) has never been tested but deemed in breach of the DMCA esp in regard to distribution. So might become interesting if Microsoft stop covering the license for end users. As for SA Fair use, nothing about it being illegal. So download and enjoy
