Thread: Price for returning SeaGate hard drive?

  1. #1

Default Price for returning SeaGate hard drive?

I have a defective Samsung HM500JI 500 GB SATA II 2,5" hard drive which I bought last year (2011), since then it never really functioned as it should, I thought it may need some time to wear in. A year later, I lose all my data and the drive can't write/read data faster than 512kbps.
So basically I'm planning to send it back. And from looking at the SeaGate site, their returning rules are extremely strict on packaging. I was wondering. If I wanted to send a 2.5" hard drive over to USA, what sort of packaging would I have to get and where can I find it. Also, what will it cost me to send my hard drive over to SeaGate from RSA. Apparently they don't allow the "collect mail", they'd prefer you send it straight to them. So how do I go about doing this. Last time I sent something over to USA, it was my defective Xbox 360 which cost me R1 200 to send over.

Did you import the drive or bought it locally?

I have never had a problem returning defective Seagate drives to the local supplier/agent.

Why send it to the USA?

It's only a 500GB - going to be cheaper just to buy a new one locally.

Maybe the Seagate people here will honour the warranty.
Many hardware companies has global warranties.
See if still has it's serial number.
They will scan it in and check the warranty.

No man. Just no. Drives either work 100% out of the box ... or not.

Hmmm. Have you tried swopping the SATA cable with one from another 'working' drive? A drive stuck at 512 almost sounds like a HDD stuck in PIO mode.

I have tried 3 different different SATA cables and 2 different PC's, they all tell me the same story.

I'm going through the same thing. I've got a Samsung drive that needs to go to seagate. Of the options they offers sending it to the Netherlands seemed like the best one so I've got to send it off next week. I've got a feeling it's going to cost me a pretty penny though.

I had the same thing with 3 drives purchased from a local online retailer that vanished after ignoring my warranty requests for 3 weeks. None of the local retailers / dealers / suppliers would touch them, even Rectron refused to do anything with them for me. Not one of the drives could be tracked on any of the local guys systems despite being confirmed as under warranty on the Seagate site.

Who knows where Digital Addiction secured their supplies from (this was after Eitai had sold it) and my only option was to send them to the closest Seagate location... for South Africa it is the Netherlands. There is NO local Seagate representation in Africa at all.

    The only thing that troubled me was Seagate's return terms & conditions;

    - You must pay shipping costs for all shipments from you to Seagate.
    - Send your product to Seagate using the carrier of your choice. Please use a method with ability to trace shipment. Seagate is not responsible for shipments for which the carrier cannot provide proof of delivery.
    - If your product is under warranty, Seagate will pay for postage of repaired/replacement products from Seagate to you. You must pay all applicable duties and customs charges for shipments to and from Seagate.
    - Seagate is not responsible for loss or damage during transit. We suggest that you purchase freight insurance on your shipments.
    - Seagate reserves the right to return NTF products back to their owner and may charge for associated shipping costs
Each drive had to be boxed separately in a Seagate approved container, with foam, and antistatic. I binned them - too much hassle and the risk of them being lost / damaged in transit and then Seagate not replacing them, all at my cost.

    The next month Thailand flooded.

Our one supplier charges R150ex VAT to process warranty Seagate drives that were not purchased from them. I am not too sure if the policy is the same for Samsung drives, but if you PM me the serial number I will see what I can do for you?

I'm in the same boat and I reckon surface mail will be the cheapest option. I don't care if it takes two months to get there as long as it gets there before the warranty expires.
Courier or air mail will cost more than what the drive is worth.

Seagate recommends using a service that includes tracking. Does surface mail?

Phone Rectron and give them your serial no. They might be able to sort you out
