Default Mint dropping Ubuntu ties in favor to Debian pure.

I don't see anyone mentioning this but Mint dropped the umbilical to Ubuntu in favor of pure Debian (Well this is for LMDE 201204)

Seeing that I am not much of a Ubuntu fan thanx to Unity I wonder if this is a good thing in the long run or an accident waiting looking for a place to happen, esp seeing that most online how-to's normally cover Ubuntu.

Anyway, doing a fresh install tonight instead of my normal dist upgrade and will see how it goes from there.

    Ooh... interesting.

Well it is a good move, seeing as Mint has always been dependant on Ubuntu.

Well Ubuntu is Debian based so its a natural path for any distro to move closer to its origins to find its own identity.

They said the same last year as well, so I'll just wait and see for when that happens. I posted a thread on it last year as well, but can't seem to find it now.

    Found it:
    http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthre...ht=mint+debian

There they only mention KDE, but I'm sure they mentioned that there was a general shift towards Debian.

This time round I think the claim has a bit more credibility seeing how Ubuntu has been doing lately.

Bit concerned though...Mint has lots of users, but they're a bit thin on the developer & organization side compared to Ubuntu I reckon.

    Edit: Removed derail question.

It looks a bit better.... has a few nice changes, and..... basically it's a skinned Ubuntu.

Erm not anymore, paths started splitting when Ubuntu started using Unity as main Window manager.

Mint now seems to have completely split the ties.

And my word does it fly now!!!!

Edit: my old Mint desktop with Cinnamon 1.4 http://imgur.com/a/p3Ug9 Will update as soon as 201204 is set up.

    Oh yes, of course
I tried out the current (well before 1204) one and it had a Gnome fork thingy going.
I was obviously comparing it to the cool Ubuntu.

Oh man, you can see the ties has been cut... clearly. A lot of things that made Linux "pretty" ala Ubuntu style is no more.

This can be seen from even the start-up phase that doesn't call for a splash screen anymore, to the services its running, but in a way its a good thing. My i7 now starts up in under 10 second compared to the old Mint 12's 37 seconds (It now even kicks Windows 8's ass on this PC)

Other things that I notice clearly is the fonts are way different, almost crisper looking. Downloading Nvidia drivers now manually (No more hardware drivers popup) Forgot that was a Ubuntu thing.

Oh and apt-add-repository is broken, don't know if this is a bug or a feature

Will continue to report as I find things that changed.
.... and thanks for all the fish.

Yeah that is one thing I remember from my old Debian days.... Debian and Ubuntu does work rather differently. Had to spend some time googling how to do half of the stuff I could do with ease in Ubuntu.

Erm mint 12 is old news, this is 201204, Mint 12 = Ubuntu 11.10, so in theory this is Mint 13

Edit: Holy Mother, I hope they dont go back!!!
Yes its not pretty but my word I forgot how fast Linux on a desktop can be.

PS: I use pretty as in user friendly ways of doing things not as in looks.

Besides the use of sudo how different can the basic use be between the two?
