Thread: Can I split a 1MB line to 2 x 512 between two people?

    Default Can I split a 1MB line to 2 x 512 between two people?

    Hi!

Me and a buddy in the commune where I'm staying are sharing a 1MB ADSL line. We got it to do mostly assignments and a bit of online gaming. Now lets say he sits and watches youtube videos or downloads something - then I'm screwed and I don't want that happening and I also don't want to argue with him. Is there a way - software/modem settings we can split the speed in two so he gets his even share and me mine?

    Thanks

You'll have to limit both the upload & download speeds, otherwise it won't be shared completely.
You can play around a bit, but I'd reckon 52kB/s for download and 25KB/s for upload should share it equally.

Ah man I don't think that software will work for me because we have a single port modem running to a switch, then from the switch to our PC's. I'll probably need a 4 port router to limit the speeds of both computers?

How do shared accounts on different lines behave? So 2 concurrent connections but used in 2 different locations. Not applicable in this situation but just curious...

Shizzler, NetLimiter will work just the same whether your have a 4 port router or a single port router which is in turn connected to a switch.

NetLimiter can limit just the Internet traffic, which it can distinguish from the LAN traffic by simply looking at the destination IP address. Like LAN things would be anything on say 192.168.1.* and everything else will be regarded as Internet traffic.

The only reasons why NetLimiter could be a poor choice are:
    1) the other person can easily disable the limit
    2) you cannot run it on phones or devices running non-Windows operating systems

    @sand_man:
It depends on the account. Capped accounts usually give you full speed at both locations.
Uncapped accounts usually don't allow concurrent connections from different locations. Those uncapped accounts that do allow it to be shared will split the bandwidth equally.

Get yourself a Mikrotik routerboard 750GL or something similar. You can set it up however you want. eg. max 512k per user all the time or only 512k per user when the line is saturated. This way you will get the benefit of 1meg but when both of you are using the line you can guarantee 512 each. There are also numerous other scenarios. eg. 1 DSL line but two ISP accounts, one for each of you, etc etc

Best advice, and for the cost of the RB750GL, it's a no brainer, but a fair challenge to setup (you'll need to do some reading to get started)

Or, get an old PC (Pentium3 with 128Mb RAM and 10Gb HDD)

Install Smoothwall and Advanced Web Proxy

Now you can also throttle/limit each user's connection to a percentage of line speed.

My server (not smoothwall) boot again once the power come on. Takes the same time as my router to get to a usable state. It can, if set correctly, work on any PC.

RB750 is WAY more power efficient...and besides it runs at 680mhz so plenty of CPU power too.

Sorry for the thread hijack/off-topic post.

Does the RB750 have a built-in ADSL modem or would one need a seperate modem?
