It seems the Australians have the same problem and that it can be fixed: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/03/ho...t-jailbreaking

I tried it on my New iPad, rebooted twice but no luck... Perhaps someone needs to create a South African (Vodacom) flavoured .ipcc file.

    Cheers!!

So, are any of the local operators supporting tethering yet?

So far nothing but if you have any suggestions on what I can do to tempt it into working . . .

OK well for Cell C this worked:
I just put the APN "Internet" into both fields under Settings -> Mobile Data -> APN Settings, then turned on Personal Hotspot under Settings -> General -> Network

You say both fields - well I have APN: (currently internet) followed by Username and Password which are currently blank.

I found this solution on Hello Peter from an MTN Rep. The person complaining confirmed that it worked for their MTN iPad 3. I might give it a go tonight to see if it works for a Vodacom ipad3. Unless someone has already tried it and let me know not to waste my time.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention via the Hello Peter website. We appreciate that you have made us aware of the issues that you have experienced.

There is a fix for this problem. In order to rectify this, you would need to restore the device. Please ensure that you back up all your information before proceeding with this option. You can back up via iTunes or iCloud.
Once you have successfully backed up your device information, process the "restore" on the device. After restoring the device, the iPad will restart on its own. When it restarts, it will offer the option for you to accept carrier settings. Please reject. Click "NO"
Once this is done, you will be able to access personal hotspot without this issue and you can then restore from your backup.

    Apologies for this.

Rest assured, it is not our intention to displease you. We look forward to improving on the service delivery to you.

    I'll give it a shot.

Edit: it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

A friend of mine cut up his prepaid sim he used in a dongle and at first it didn't work on the iPad 3 but he retyped the iphone.vodacom.za apn i and restarted and the Hotspot section appeared in settings , My data contract sim (actual micro sim) on Vodacom doesn't seem to want to want the Hotspot setting at all thus far.

well, the wifi hotspot works on the iphone 4s with 8ta, so it should work on the new ipad as well.
