    It looks like your account is still a 384 account on MWEB's side. PM MWEBGUY and ask for a 4meg test account.

    havent the rumours of everyone getting bumped up in their speeds been going around for years now?

    Ok, it took a little back and forth with MWeb Guy, and numerous resets of the router but it seems I am getting acceptable speeds now :

    Not sure what they do their side but just happy to be getting more than my 384k line now. It seems no one gets near 1024 though from the sounds of things?

    You'll never get the full 1024 due to overheads, etc. Best I get is around 0.95 Mb/s on a Speedtest.

    Are those overheads directly proportional to the line speed though? In other words, I am "losing" around 200k here, if I lost that amount on my old 384k line I would have been crawling. If I were to go up to 2mbps would I expect to "lose" even more, perhaps 400k?

    100%
    1024kbps - 1/16th (roughly) = 960kbps / 8 = real performance of 120KBps....not taking into consideration any other variables, i.e. quality of your line, etc.

    It's % based. Around 15-20%.

    I've found that dividing by 9.5 is a pretty accurate estimate of the maximum that you can expect.

    384 / 9.5 = 40.4 KBps
    512 / 9.5 = 53.8 KBps
    1024 / 9.5 = 107.8 KBps
    4096 / 9.5 = 431.2 KBps

    Obviously you'd round it off and it's just an estimate, but a reasonably accurate one.

    Those are more real-world numbers, 100%

    This is what people usually seem to get:

    384 = 34.0 KBps
    512 = 48.0 KBps
    1024 = 102.0 KBps
    4096 = 426.0 KBps

    Hi guys

    Any clue when Telkom will start upgrading us 384K'ers to 1Mb. Is it still June or has it been moved because of the court cases?

    Officially in August. Some guys reported early upgrades, but Telkom said that the upgrade process will start in August and run through September.

    Initially the date was June, guess the court cases pushed the date out.
