Thread: setting up external antenna

    Default setting up external antenna

    Hey,

so I've bought a Netsys 18dBi high gain antenna and connected it to my B683 modem. When I switch my antenna settings from internal to external My signal strength drops drastically! I thought any antenna would improve signal strength, even if only a little. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

    Justin.

Do a search on some earlier threads. I know I saw someone posting a solution about that issue somewhere. There is a process to follow but u cannot just switch it over.

+1. Sure it is antenna for 3G bands?

Not sure if it's a 3G antenna to be honest. Will find out and do a search on earlier threads. Thanks guys

    This should help:
Make sure the device is disconnected before you switch between the antenna modes i.e. set the connection profile to manual, and disconnect - then change antenna to inner or outer.

Thanks sajunky, that's exactly what I did. Only way for gateway to successfully change from internal to external, but since I've done that my signal strength is virtually non-existent.

Ok so I may be missing a step here. I set my connection to manual then switch antenna to external mode then set connection to auto. Does that sound right?

From my view it is correct, assuming when you switched antenna type, your connection was off. If wasn't, you need manually disconnect. I don't have router, can't verify.

    Hi Judgeling!

Did a google search for your antenna - is this it? If yes, then your problem is you are using the wrong antenna. This antenna is for wifi signal strength and not 3G.

Thanks for replying but that is not the antenna I'm using. This is the one, if you can tell me whether or not it's compatible that would be great.

    How do you read
18dBi RP-SMA Omni Wireless WLAN Antenna 2.4GHz Pro Base
    Not compatible, definitely.

On the other side signal unlikely would drop to 0 with such antenna. It would be useless for 3G, but I expect you should have at least some signal present. There must be other cause of the problem, probably router configuration mentioned above.

Edit: Why you have zero signal? Simple answer! Antenna uses RP-SMA connector, and router SMA connector. You can screw-in these parts, but no side has a center pin - required for conveying signal. There are converters available, but it won't work anyway, as it is not 3G antenna.

    Hi

This one is also a WiFi antenna.

    Sorry, it will not work.
