    Default Common-rail diesel injection engines

Heard that the injectors on common-rail diesels need frequent replacement than the oldstyle mechanical setup.

    What might be the cause?

    frequent= 150 000km cleaning them.
They say if you buy south african clean diesel it last even longer.
3 persons at work, use only depot diesel, and they got over 250 000 km and sold the cars.
1 guy at 150 000 did clean his.

South African diesel are dirty, not by dust coming in contact with the diesel, but the refinery lacking.

50ppm? Hardly clean when compared to EU-spec which is down to 5ppm and 1ppm

I had to replace my injectors at 120 000. I only used Sasol (50 ppm). There is no cleaning of injectors, injectors can be refurbished but not on all cars and you wont find the dealers offering this serivce at all.
    Dealers want you to replace.
I have a Corsa CDTI, very nice car, but the 4 injectors cost me close to 5 grand each. Also had to fix the diesel pump a while back which was close to 14 grand as well.
So all the money you will save on driving a diesel car will have too be spend sooner or later on fixing the engine again. Thats how it worked out for me. (Im currently thinking of getting a Lumina, stuff the petrol, just go for it and get an engine that doesnt need fixing every year)
And just to add, I've never heard of anybody not having to replace injectors at 100000km's, if you drive a diesel its part of life..

that's what happens when you use low-sulphur diesel, it lack lubricity. You could save saved yourself megabucks if you had used 2-stroke oil in your diesel.

Diesel is die fuel of the devil, avoid it or pay the price.

I don't mind people using diesel but I hate getting stuck behind a Isuzu KB 250 or delivery truck with shot injectors and no particulate filter.
Diesel fumes triggers my hay fever within seconds and then I sometimes end up having sinus headaches for the rest of the day.

I can change that for you. I've got 410 000km on my CDi and never touched the injectors. I usually use 50ppm if it's available, but am happy enough with 500ppm (in fact I was getting slightly better consumption on 500ppm on average when I last checked).

I've had the diesel pump reconditioned, changed the regulator on the alternator twice, replaced the starter motor, and spent a bloody fortune on tyres, but that's about it for repairs.

    yo yo,

I have a 2005 VW polo 1.9tdi (shape just before the new one) and I have never heard of the above, I have done 170 000 km now and the car is still going strong.

may I add that it is chipped as well, so surely this woulda stressed these components too?

I normally put in 50ppm, but i dont go out of my way if the current station lacks 50ppm.

Anyone with a VW tdi had this issue?

Yours is actually a PD injector diesel, not a common rail. PD injectors are a lot pricier than CRD injectors...

But less prone to failure since they run at lower pressures than CRD ones
