Thread: iPhone email

  1. #1

    Default iPhone email

I may get an iPhone in 2 months ... just wondering about the mail going from a BB to iPhone.

Is it the same push type as the BB?
Or do I need to check each time?

Yes, afaik it's similar as long as you're using IMAP.

    Thanks bwana!

I actually see on the iPad you can set 15, 30 etc intervals - or manual. I'm guessing it's the same then

That's for fetch - push, if your mail server supports it, should mean emails are sent to your device as soon as they are received by the mail server.

As I said - Push is the sort of thing you're used to with the blackberry - fetch is like setting your email client on the pc to get email every 5, 10 or 15 minutes.

all info i have been able to find is its more like outlook express than bb email... it needs to 'refresh' each time on an interval, even with IMAP. resulting in phone having to send/recieve data every few seconds forever, if you want your mail to appear as fast as BB. so not same at all.

Its the same push email on MS exchange, all the same BB features only thing I need that the iPhone doesnt support is managing out of office settings.

That's the fetch setting - I sit with a blackberry and iPad in front of me throughout the day and emails arrive almost at the same time on both as long as I have push enabled on my iPad.

bwana - last time you said I should register a Gmail account to get past the 'rejected because no relaying' issue.

I really do not want another email account - can't I simply use the outgoing Gmail server?!

I don't think that was me who said that - possibly biometrics?

Oh - I'm not sure who ... but it seemed the general consensus was to get Gmail.

I'll try pull up the thread - but I'm thinking there is no issue using an SMTP server of a mail service I don't use?

Yes, if you use gmail's smtp server, it will change the reply address automatically to that of the gmail account you are using to auth with.

Back to your original Q, yes, the iPhone can work the same as the blackberry, it's just not on by default for accounts like gmail and yahoo...

Use submission port 587 to your work server and turn on authentication with same credentials as incoming, any mail admin worth his salt would have this active for mobile smtp
