Thread: Nokia Lumia 900 vs iPhone 4S costs/margins

Default Nokia Lumia 900 vs iPhone 4S costs/margins

I just don't get why people still continue to waste money on overpriced Apple products!

Because of brand preference, brand recognition and perception. Also critical mass and social perception. Its like asking why people would buy a Porsche and not a Ferrari.

Also iOS does offer a pretty darn good user experience for the casual user.

Listing those three criteria makes the decision no more sane! Effectively you are saying they are duped by the marketing.

Right on, most casual users are. That's why marketing is such a big deal!

    Is that not the truth?

Apple is a marketing monster, and they have been since the first iPhone was launched.

Should also consider resale value of which Apple products tend to retain a fair share...

What people dont get when it comes to Mobile OS/Phone of choice is that sometimes the person hate your OS just as much as you hate his and no amount of telling him how good it is for you is gonna convince him. This is especially true when it comes to what you value vs the other person.

Example: I like Windows Phone layout but 3 things will prevent me from getting it
    • Dyslexia - you have nooooooo idea how painfull it is for me to use a WP(Way to much reading)
    • Lack of customization - I can not make the phone look the way I want
    • Lack of Open Source - Most of my work, hell my company makes a living off Open Source so it completely goes against my livelihood.

So even if the phone can bring me coffee in the morning it still will not work for me.

Now I am sure iPhone users will have similar lists like for example Windows Phone's lack of Mac Sync and so on, so end of the day its not only about the price but its about the user and his needs.
.... and thanks for all the fish.

I'm there are far more costs and expenses than just component prices.

That's exactly what It comes down to at the end of the day. iPhone suits my needs and preferences and I don't need to convince anyone else because it may not suit their needs and preferences.

The reason I don't get involved in any Android vs iPhone vs Whatever else threads. It all boils down to the above.

Economies of scale. 30million retina displays is bound to cost apple far less per unit than the 600 000 Nokia lumia touchscreens.

That's true but this is about the margins.

Well you can see apple is receiving some huge bulk discounts, just look at the processor costs. It seems Apple doesn't pass on the economies of scale benefits to their users, Nokia on the other hand has no other option but to do that, although it appears that this doesn't seem to be helping them much

Interesting that they cost the same to make but the the iPhone 4S has a better screen, better camera, better processor and better GPU. Economies of scale.

They charge more because people are willing to pay that much.
