Thread: Eskom tells us to Save Electricity

Default Eskom tells us to Save Electricity

I was in my car today listening to the news, Eskom have told us again that we must save as they are pushing up the prices again to pay for 2 power plants that they are planning to build as they have borrowed money.

If memory serves me correctly, did Eskom not make something like R 16 BILLION last year? If so, why do they need to push up the prices when clearly they are making a lot of money?
Also, have Eskom not being saying for the last 5 years that they are planning to build more power stations yet not much has really happend yet we continue to have price hikes and Eskom continue to have record profits year on year?

If memory does in fact serve me correctly, then Eskom should be using some of their Billions to pay off the new power plants and not expect us South Africans to just cough up more everytime which effects the economy in many negative ways!

Your 2c is valid in a way, but still wrong..

Medupi is costing in excess of R30bn, and its being build along with Kusile (which is costing about the same).. so their profit won't cover the building costs at all.

It also takes a good many years to build a coal power station.. its not something you just slap together.

My biggest gripe with Eskom is that they are punishing the Residential consumer who is NOT the biggest power user at all.

The residential consumer has no voice, where as billiton and all the other power hogs have singed them into contracts.
These contracts where obviously made possible with the use of serious bribes, but no one wants to look into that.. someone might get into trouble!

But seeing they got loans to build them, I assume there would be terms negotiated on the repayment of said loan? Something like 20 years +? Then his argument actually makes perfect sense not so?

Yes they did sign loans... but unfortunately I doubt we as a public will ever get to see the terms. Infrastructure would normally be 20+ years yes, but there is no telling what Eskom actually signed unfortunately

Yep... Still his argument has some sway! Surely the loans can cover the building costs and the profits can be used to payback the loans? Oh no I forgot they also need bonuses for not building power stations when they should have!

Worse, the contracts are linked to commodity prices. So the worldwide commodity slump has decreased the contract price of electricity to the smelters.
