Thread: Ok I'm so confused - Telkom line speed upgrade

Default Ok I'm so confused - Telkom line speed upgrade

I'm trying to figure out how this will work in terms of pricing. I currently have a 1mb uncapped account from Mweb at R199. I then pay R289 also to Mweb, for my 1mb line rental. I chose to do it through mweb because it was a tiny bit cheaper. Therefore my total is R488 per month.

A friend of mine has a 384kb uncapped account with Mweb for R219 per month but has since been upgrade to a 1mb uncapped account for R199. Which is great. However he and rents his 384kb line from Telkom for I think R152 and with that in mind, does that now mean Telkom has upgraded all 384kb users to a 1mb line for free and effectively given him the same speed as me?

It now looks like he has the same 1mb uncapped line and package as I do except I'm now paying a whole lot more for the same line from Mweb (R289) whilst he pays R152 (Telkom) for his?

The upgrades from 384kbps to 1mbps will only begin on August. He's line speed should still be 384kbps Down, 128kbps up. Only his account is 1mbps. Don't worry, mweb's not ripping you off - 1mbps will be upgraded to 2mbps.

Ok, but then why have some people reported an upgrade in speed from 384 to 1mb?

This is the best way to check you line speed http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/ . Also you can log into your router.

You need to separate line speen from data account speed.

At the moment you have a 1meg account on a 1meg line, your friend has a 1meg account on a 384 line.

You get 1 meg speeds, he gets 384 speeds.

Starting August Telkom will be upgrading the 384lines to 1meg and the 1meg lines to 2meg.

So then your friend will have a 1meg account on a 1meg line, while you'll have a 1meg account on a 2meg line.

MWEB will be releasing a new 2meg package very soon.

Telkom uncapped subscribers will get their lines and accounts upgraded for free.

In other words downgrade as soon as your line speed gets bumped up, you'll be wasting your money paying for something you do not use, or pay more for faster speed.

either way you'll have to contact your ISP and get them to do something

Not a complete waste. You'll get an extra 10-15% increased speed boost due to overheads being removed.

What is the upload speed for the 1mbps lines??

Will the R152 p/m for the 384kbps increase in cost when the upgrade happens?
