    Default UNISA piano grades

    How long does the average

    (i) child
    (ii) adult

take to reach the various UNISA piano grades (Pre-Grade 1 up to Grade 8), and how many hours per week of practice is necessary for this?

    No idea at all.

But, as someone who plays an instrument, I'd say one hour per day, every single day, will get a person where they want to go after a couple of years.

the standard is to do a grade per year for children. for an adult you could possibly do 2 grades, 3 at the very most if you are good, per year if you practice alot. I used to practice for about 20-30 minutes a day when I took piano lessons at school. I did until grade 5, then my teacher died and we couldn't find another good teacher with whom I felt comfortable with.

Took me 4 years at high school to go from scratch to grade 5 flute. Then again I was lazy and only practice abuot 2-3 times a week for a half hour or so ... but I guess if you dedicated you'll get to grade 6 in about 4-5 years no problem

^ This. Two of my nieces also did up to grade 5 in piano. I understand that after grade 5 it gets difficult because there's 3 exams in total per grade.

As an aside, I admire my nephew for doing 6 grades in 5 years - he's grading in organ. I'd like to grade but I just don't have the time to practice.

What I mean is, if someone is doing lessons, and aims to complete their grades, this should be enough time to do it in.

I'm in Grade 11 (still in school) atm and I completed my Grade 6 Unisa exam in Piano last year (was my first exam). I started in about 2007 but I practised every day and ended up taking to the piano quickly. Unisa exams I think require much more work than the other exam boards though. I've played pieces from all of the exam boards, and Unisa still sets the highest standard.
