Thread: drilling hole in thermostat

    Default drilling hole in thermostat

    hello,

    i am driving a 98 hyundai accent 1300.
i was advised to drill a hole in thermo to help solve erratic heat gauge readings.

Where exactly is the best place to drill such a hole, do anyone know?

I might upload a picture later and you can see what my thermo looks like.

I might not know much about cars but I would run like hell to another mechanic...

Had a similar problem before. That mechanic changed the thermostat after declaring the radiator healthy and filled the system with coolant. The problem was solved....

basically all you doing will be bypassing the thermostat. you might as well just remove the thermostat will do the same thing as drilling it.

all you will be doing by drilling it is letting water into the engine early rather then when the engine is warm so you going to have crap with cold starts.
chances are if your thermostat is the problem then you wont get the erratic readings, but if it not you bugger up a perfectly good thermostat.

give us a breakdown of when you geting the readings so maybe we can give you other tips on what to fix.
Some times the internet is so slow, it would be faster to just fly to Google's headquarters and ask them this $h1t in person.!

    I agree with that .
Just get a new thermostat and put it in, and speak to the sales person they normally upgrade parts if there are problems with the original parts.(buy an OEM part)
Flushing the cooling system while you have the thermostat out is probably a good thing to seeing the age of the car .

i put in a new radiator recently.

This is a new thermostat i had fitted. Granted it doesn't look exactly the same as last, sales guy said it should work...

Temp gauge goes crazy after about 4km on the road, starts cool then bounces between hot and cool

If the guage is flickering around it sounds like temp guage sender unit faulty or loose or dirty connection on it or the guage perhaps?

    hello,

I had already fitted a new sender unit.

It doesn't start its nonsense until i've driven around 3km

saturday I took a joyride of 20km and back and the thing didn't act up once. I was confused :/

can i spray contact cleaner on the gauge connections?

I had a problem with a corolla a few years back. The temp gauge reading is normally in the middle somewhere, and it suddenly went higher, not erratic, but overall. Changed the thermostat, new coolant, none helped. Also what started happening is that when I drove a few kms, and stop somewhere in town, when I come back there was coolant under the car. Then I changed the radiator cap, and all of the problems was ended.

Dont say its your problem, but for the few bucks a radiator cap costs, its worth a try.

NEVER drill a hole in thermostat - either get a new one or throw the thing away.

Are you sure you have the right thermostat?

it goes to high, stay there for 3-10 seconds and drops to normal running temp (beween two dots)
here it stays for slightly longer 5-20 secs and goes up to hot again.

First thing i am going to try is getting a new thermostat. The one that is currently installed was also new, i hope i dont waste my money here tho

You could drill a 1mm or 2mm hole through. It would slow the water temperature build-up though, but not by much
