Thread: Mweb Vs Afrihost ADSL Uncapped bundle Price Vs Performance(Only 4MB & 10 MB)

I had an mweb trial account a while back, so the Mweb salesman phoned me yesterday to ask if I still wanted to sign up for their 4mb account, come July. And as much as I would like to say yes, I said no, not unless they bring down their prices.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Mweb supporter, but how can they justify to me that I should pay the same price for a 4mb product, as a 10mb product. So the sales man said that, if i pay Mweb for the 4mb account, I'll be getting my full line speed, but if I get a 10mb account from Afrihost I might not get the full 10mb speed. ie, only 8mb... Weak argument.. I'm still getting more, for the same price.

The salesman said he was gonna talk to his manager for me, and call back, but I havn't heard anything from him since. So Mweb, if you are viewing this post, please come to the party and drop the prices of your higher end products. I have access to a 10mb line, I know I'm lucky, but with rates like R1999 per month, how can anyone afford that?

So Afrihost, I may well be seeing you at the end of the month for your 10mb bundled product!

Unthrottled - will depend on where your usage spikes and how much you've exceeded the threshold in the 30 rolling period. You can check your bandwidth usage report and get an idea of what your last 30 day usage has been.
Can you please explain this for me I am coming from MWEB where there is no throttling only shaping. Are you saying that if you exeed the allowed amount by too much you wont be unthrottled even after 30 days?

Yes you will be unthrottled as soon as your "last 30 day total" moves under the threshold.

Good luck with the IS throttle rules. Been there , done that , burnt my fingers. Back with MWEB 4Mbps product. Chalk and cheese.

These arent IS throttle rules. These are afrihosts throttle rules.

maybe you should read some of the other threads... Im on 220gb for the month, and still getting my full line speed...

there have been some ping issues, but i have spoken to Afriman about that. hopefully it will get sorted soon.

Absolutely. We only throttle at a MUCH higher threshold (depending on which speed uncapped you're running) and we don'e throttle as severely as we used to. We keep the max throttle speed reasonable enough to still experience decent speeds.

As soon as you sign up with us on uncapped, you are uncapped (unleashed?). The account is active in a matter of minutes. remember that we only take over the Telkom line, your data account must be cancelled with your current ISP. So you are signing up for a brand new account.
I would also like to switch over to the 10Mbit uncapped account but I will be moving into a new place soon so I want to wait until I move. Will this promotion still be on in 2 months time?

I'm really hoping so. It depends on how many signups we have and if Telkom surprises us with pricing and infrastructure announcements. But if all goes according to plan, it should be.

If you hit your throttle - just signup for a second line. It's STILL cheaper than MWEB uncapped.

There is something concerning me heavily with the Afrihost Bundles.
    On your page I quote
    Satisfaction Guaranteed
You have 60 days from signup to get DOUBLE your money back if you are not completely happy with our products and outstanding client service.
This Afrihost bundle service is still very new I take it, and I don't think it has even been out for more than 60 days now (not sure). So this is what worries me. You guarantee double money back after 60 days but no one has really been on the service that long. This tells me that we don't know at the moment what happens once that guarantee runs up You get my drift. (more shaping etc)

The next thing is that now so many more people are going to go for your incredible deal. What comes straight to mind is the previous failure when Afrihost first launched their uncapped accounts. I'm not going into detail but the problem according to the CEO of Afrihost was that they "did not expect that much usage".
Here is the full Q&A: http://sagamer.co.za/forum/showthrea...capped-service
(not sure If I am allowed to post that)

So I would first like to hear for the new Afrihost bundle subscribers in a months or 2 time how their line is serving them.
    What you guys think?

EDIT: I would like this to be a subscriber/user conversation without representatives getting involved. You'll understand why.

    Peace out!

It's obviously up to you (and probably prudent) to wait to see what other users have to say. The 60 day guarantee is a cornerstone of our brand, and will be honoured no matter what the circumstances. When we first launched Uncapped about 2 or 3 years ago, we did approach it entirely from the wrong perspective and while we burned our fingers, it was a lesson well learnt. The way we've structured our products now is getting a much better reception, and clients are now moving a TON of bandwidth at reasonable prices. Our Unshaped Uncapped prices are going to change how ISP's look at Business DSL, and by the time they figure it out, we'll have launched something other eyeball melting specials.

    Rant over

    Hi Afriman,

Could you please let us know what the current thresholds are?

I signed up for my account this month and found that it started being throttled rather quickly. (I think at about 80Gig or so) - At first i thought it was because Telkom messed up (Apparently my number was not the same as I was given which turned out to be an old account - plenty of blah blah later this was sorted eventually)

Eg. Right now I am downloading from a HTTP site and getting a MASSIVE speed of only 25kB/s (I have a 4M line).
