Thread: Samsung galaxy S3 - ICS data hunger

  1. #1

Default Samsung galaxy S3 - ICS data hunger

I got my S3 last week and have been using it since this morning on mobile data.

I have not used any apps execpt for few whattsapp msgs.... and my data is already over 25mb....

What can be done to tame this hunger data beast without taking it completely back to the cell stone age and not being able to use any apps?

    PLEASE HELP

If you get a smartphone that isn't BB, you HAVE to get a databundle.

Even if it's just 100 MB for 50 bucks.

I normally get the 500 MB for 150 bucks.

Or the 250 MB for 100 bucks.

Also use wifi when ever possible.

If you're not in a wifi zone always use 2G unless you need some speed for browsing or downloading apps etc, but then remember to switch back to 2G, this will also save you huge amounts of battery power. With 2G you can still get watsapp messages or emails.

If you use your phone as a GPS, use 2G. You can even switch off your internet off once you've started navigating which saves a lot of power.

Sometimes, if you don't have to get watsapp messages or emails you could even turn the internet off.

There are also apps available that attempt to control your 2G and switches between 2G & 3G automatically, an example is JuiceDefender.

Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing.

Also try a app from the play store called Onavo Extend. This enabled data compression before data gets sent to your phone over the network. I have not had a chance to try this app as I am waiting for ICS on my RAZR. Try it and see if it makes a difference. According to their site it can compress by as much as 80%

Install the "My Data Manager Free" app and make sure what is using the data.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say it is the email app included in ICS. Had the same problem with high mobile data used by the app. I then decided to forward all my mails to my Gmail account and only use the Gmail app.

    Problem solved for me.

But install the app I mentioned and see what is using your data.

I posted this in the galaxy s3 thread in response to the same question you posted there:

Seems normal given you have the device since last week. It will sync up your contacts with gmail (if you have never synced your phone with gmail). Some of the widgets might be set to refresh every 15 mins or more frequently. If you have weather apps, they could also be refreshing very often. Then your gmail is also syncing.

Also try check all social networking apps (twitter, fb etc), news apps etc and check their refresh intervals. Set those to manually refresh or to the longest interval. It should cut down on your data usage.

What app are you using to track your data usage? There are some apps which will tell you whats consuming the data. Try Onavo.

I have a 500mb data bundle, but this data running is just from idling and not using any apps......... My wife has a galaxy tab and her facebook and some other data apps are runnng 24/7 without nearly as much data usage as i have even with my phone in idle.....

Install Onavo extend and Onavo data monitor, use opera browser, set app updates to over wifi only in the play store app. In fact if the app doesn't need constant connection set to wifi only.

Android ICS comes with each own Data Usage monitor, where you can set a limit and can see exactly how much bandwidth each app uses.

    Settings > Data Usage.

    Easy as pie.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 - It is the only phone you will ever need.

I have done all of the above...

Onavo extend was using the most data 19mg out of the 29mb.... so i uninstalled it!
    second is Android OS 7mb
    third is facebook 5mb

The thing is.... i just opened facebook twice to see what it does to my data count.....

My wife's galaxy tab have social hub, facebook, yahoo finance, weather, news24, skype, and a lot more syncs running than me on my phone and she hardly uses any mobile data during the day???

Is it the different android OS..... ICS the problem????

I need to get solutions..... i based my change to samsung on the data usage of the tab..... otherwise this has been a huge mistake in changing to android....

Onavo actually increases usage? I have just messaged my friend now telling him to remove it from his Iphone. I told him that it should save him some data...but he has been using a lot even though he says he does not understand why as he mostly uses WhatsApp.

Interesting, i have also been using onavo, and just checked.

Currently it had used 201mb, next app is at 41mb.

Maybe our is because it handles all data from the applications and so ics sees it as the consumer.

I have had it on for just over a week, so that might be why i still see data from other apps on the list.

Ifi look at onavo reports it gives a break down, of all apps and their usage, but no where near the usage of 200mb ics reports.

Will monitor it and supply some feedback.

25MB in a WEEK? That's almost nothing, I don't see how you manage that actually. I only use my phone for things like browsing etc when I'm connected by wi-fi but even so it uses about 300MB in a month. The data bundles the SA networks give us with smartphones are beyond pathetic.

To think, I read an article yesterday about an American complaining that he has to pay $30 per month for an uncapped package on his smartphone when he's a light user, only using about 1-2GB per month.
So y'all need to hide yo uzis, hide yo assault rifles and hide yo bazookas 'cos they disarmin' everybody out here!
