Default The Best OpenSource firewall at the moment

    Hi Guys

I know this has been mentioned before ages ago but there might be some new developments lately.

Looking for a Linux type firewall that can bandwidth limit a group of IP addresses as well as do some basic monitoring.

Reason is my house mates is absolutely killing the internet and it becomes unusable around 8 every night when Mweb relaxes the shaping. I've talked to them and threatened but nothing seems to be working.

    It's not linux, but BSD:

It might be what you are looking for.

Try Smoothwall. I have yet to try it but PostManPot seems to be the expert on it. Will try it soon tho'.

Depending on what router you have, Kamikaze or Openwrt may be an option. You could try CFosspeed (http://www.cfos.de/en/cfosspeed/cfosspeed.htm) to reduce lag for all users on a network. Untangle may also work...

    IPCOP should suit the requirements.

I have a pfsence box as backup, but uses a Mikrotik router for my firewall / routing. (RB433)
Going to replace the RB433 with a RB750 soon. (http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/p...roducts_id=863)
Prefer the Mikrotik above a PC solution just because of the power consumption.

    IPCop is in limbo ATM.

You could probably get this functionality from v1.4.21 which has very limited modern hardware support but not v2.0.4 (a lot of the old v1.4.21 addons will supposedly be incorporated in v2.1 but its release date is a moving target).

Best bet is probably a MicroTik Routerboard
