Imagine you bought this for +- R20000 and cannot upgrade it

Yes they sacrificed upgradability for thinness and more battery space. I'm not too bothered about that. 16gb RAM is the max the chipset can take anyway. You can upgrade the SSD.

With an SSD from Apple only...
as well as custom solid-state drives that include a new connector incompatible with existing third-party drives on the market.
Does it have a 2880 x 1800 resolution screen? I would take that over the extra memory any day of the week, even Wednesday.

Well personally I would take the gaming graphics cards in SLI

LCD
18.4" Glossy Display 1920x1080
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 x 2 or AMD Radeon HD 6990 x 2

The alienware kinda come with a better.... just about everything else.

Thank you for your opinion, ghoti. Please take it to the Alienware forum, though. :-)

Personally, I wouldn't be seen dead carrying a Alienware M18x - it screams "sleep-deprived gamer nerd". If they chucked one in my coffin, I would rise from the dead and my zombie would beat people over the head with it.

I am boggled that you see it as direct competition to the sleek and beautiful MBPR - they look like they are playing in vastly different market segments to me. But if that's what floats your boat, go for it. It's your money.

Well, MBPR screams "I'm a Zombie" allready...

It looks like the MBP retina will be a great machine for many - I don't even mind that it's not user upgradable, thats the price for the design, but even though it's even lighter than my 13" MBP by the time I've added a CD/DVD writer to by bag of tricks it's become inconvenient.

Sheldon has an alienware and Penny (I think she chooses a Mac for the same technical reason you do.... "its pretty and it sparkles") has a Mac. I am without a doubt a geek So I follow the power
Ill actually be buying a mac air for the same reasons you are buying a macbook. Cause its pretty... but thats where it ends.

I am not going to stop giving my opinion. This is a public forum where people with different opinions gather. Get used to it. You can find mono-opinion here: https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa

You are right, there is no direct competition. The Alienware wins in most area's so its an unfair comparison.
