Thread: Salary: how much is good?

  1. #1

Default Salary: how much is good?

A thread a couple weeks back prompted some thought... what is a good salary to be earning?
I know that this all depends on industry, experience etc etc etc but this is a here-and-now question, for your current circumstances/viewpoint.
What salary do you aspire to?
Or how much is someone else getting paid that you know, that inspires realistic jealousy? For example, I personally am not realistically jealous of Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, or even Jacko Maree or Allan Knot Craig(s). They are all out of my current earning league. I am a little jealous at some of my varsity / high school class mates that are doing a little better than me at the moment.
What's the number that, if you got paid that amount next month, would make you say "I have made it"?

I don't think i could pin it down to a number. I have in the past e.g. while at university, i said a few years after i started working i would be happy with x ammount, but once I got there, I automatically set a new target and so on.

I get 25 now, but by the time I get 50, the new amount should probably 200 or something like that. I remember when I hoped for 25, thinking that would be it. Actually poorer these days than when I earned 12.

I don't know what industry you in, but generally (of course there are exceptions) 5 years experience wont get you to R50,000 after tax.

The ****? R50 000? You better be living in JHB. Expecting that in Durban and you will get sorely disappointed.

R50000 pm you need closer to 10 years experience in my profession.

R35000 pm is my current "jealous I hope you fall and hurt yourself and I might just cut you bitch" salary

how long is a piece of string?

it's not how much that comes in that's important. it's how tightly one doesn't hang on to it. i mean that as long as i can be super generous, i don't care what i earn

Depends how you live. R30000 - R40000 is comfortable R50000 up is starting to get fancy.

Right now my goal in the next 8 months is to get to R22-25k range. Before I turn 24 I WILL be in the R50-60k pm bracket.

Want to have that R5mil house and still be driving my good ol' Toyota .
