Whitening toothpaste works rather well. I used it for about a year after my braces were removed (And I'd had 2 different sets, one metal and one plastic, for a combined total of 2 years) and the slight discolouration was gone within 6 months. I still use it, just because it generally works really well.

If your teeth are really badly stained after braces it means you either didn't keep them properly clean while you had the braces on, or the braces themselves were poorly done and the glue/removal of the glue was not correctly done.

When your braces come off you are supposed to go for 2 or 3 follow-up sessions with the Ortho and they should refer you to a Dental Hygienist for a proper cleansing, too. They polished the surface of my teeth where the glue and braces were removed so I had almost no discolouration. I don't think bleaching your teeth will help in this case - what you need is for them to physically buff the enamel surface to even out the colour and ensure residual glue has properly been removed.

Me and most of my friends who had braces also had/still have this issue. I don't really think it's anything to do with not keeping your teeth clean enough. I've been fanatical about keeping my mouth clean since I was 10.

Mine evened out over time. I have also been using Aquafresh Extreme Clean Whitening for the last couple of years, though. Although, I've always been dubious about its effects. IMO, t doesn't do anything and is just yet another cheap trick to lure in desperate people.
