    Default Need some help...

    Hey there everyone,

So I am busy getting ready to grab a new phone.

I've had my Galaxy S2 since November and as much as I love it I have grown bored of it a little. This is usually the case for me and I tend to buy a new phone every 6-8 months. I don't like being locked down in contracts so I just buy my phones cash thanks to the wonderful people who do upgrade on contract and flog their phones off on Gumtree a win-win situation if you ask me.

The HTC One X grabs my attention more than the S3, the incoming Razr2 even grabs me more than the S3, I like the Android platform but might consider checking out something else as long as it works well and I can get a good day's worth of use out of it between charges. I've had an iPhone 3S and the iOS platform didn't grow on me, same goes for the BB platform.

So this leaves me only with two options, Android vs Windows. I haven't had a Windows powered phone since my Samsung i780 which in all honesty was very weak, but back then the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform was very weak.

I ask myself if I'll really be taking a step back if I opt for for the Nokia Lumia 800, I'll pass my S2 down to my girlfriend as she can't keep her hands off of it now anyway, will be a nice upgrade from her 9300.

Are there any Lumia 800 or ex Lumia 800 users here who can shed some light for me on the device? I'm not looking for the most powerful device in the world or the flashiest, just a nice stable, fast and functional smartphone that can keep up with a power user looking for something new and will give me all the toys I need.

    Thanks in advance

As a Nokia user (and fan) myself, I 'd say you will not go wrong by buying a Lumia 800.

My upgrade is in early 2013 so I really wish it was now since the Lumias are already out.

Nevertheless, having said that, I am happy that the upgrade is a few months from now because I think the Lumias are seriously overpriced at the moment. The Lumia 900 should not compete with the SIII on price. It is not as good (spec wise) I have to admit. Obviously the SIII has got higher specs and more traction, with lots of people favoring it over WP. A lot of videos on YouTube compare the 800 to the likes of the SII and iPhone4S, which to me says that the Lumia 800 is right up there competing with those great phones.

I have no doubt that Android is great but I do not agree that it is better than WP. More apps yes, but that alone doesn't make a great OS. The metro IMO is the future with developers already bringing in metro style apps. So apart from the fact that WP7.5 and the incoming WP8 (soon) use metro and run very smoothly, I feel that Microsoft is bringing something new to the mobile arena - live tiles.

The design of the Lumia 800 is also impressive. It is award winning and certainly catches the eye (you might be buying something new to fight over with your girlfriend all over again - simply because of its looks).

Reviews of the Lumia and WP (metro style) have been great and WP apps are now well over 100,000 and counting.

So, I say, the Lumia 800 is definately your ticket out of Android and iOS monotony.

If you bored with Android after 6-8 months you'll be bored with a Windows phone within 3.

I dont know what experience the previous posters have with the phones you have mentioned but having owned all of them I would say you should seriously also consider a galaxy note,it may not have as powerful quad core cpu as the one x and s3 but it is still a seriously capable and awesome device especially for gaming since that screen is massive, that is also its greatest downfall if you have small hands then the note might just be too big.I have large hands so I got used to it after 2 days of use.

As for the lumia 800 theres no doubt about it,the interface doesn't need dual or quad core and its just amazingly smooth and fluid, the interface also feels much more modern in a "less is more" way.

Personally I loved the lumia 800 interface alot more than any other i've used to date including bb,android ics, latest ios etc.

My only gripe with it was that I NEED opera mini and it is simply not available on the lumia (wp7.5 i.e)and the standard browser was pretty crappy to me.

Also the smaller screen size isn't really my thing but i suppose a lumia 900 can see to that for you also since you are coming from a gs2.

What I'm saying is that all in all even though wp7.5 is the sleekest interface available on a mobile phone right now and that nokia clear black display compliments it so well its still the lack of apps that put me of it.

This should obviously improve with time and I will probably see windows phone again once i get a windows 8 tablet/hybrid laptop and wp8 has matured with more mainstream apps etc.

Thanks for all the great insight.

And to respond to the point of getting bored with the Windows phone, maybe I will, then I'll just put another little post like this one up asking for some tips

But I think I am sold on the Lumia 800 idea now. Going to head over to some cell stores the weekend and play around with and see how it feels in hand and then make my final decision.
