Thread: When are Hard Drive prices going to fall?

IMO, Back when the floods wreaked havoc, South African distributors made a lekka profit, pushing up the prices of drives they had in stock (stock they had before the flood prices).
South African top class financing their 4x4 double cab from the sweat of the middle class guy, struggling to afford every over priced tech since 1990........

    Just my thoughts running amok

Unfortunately the Rand/Dollar exchange rate has deteriorated sharply since the floods so we haven't seen prices fall back to pre flood levels.

Yeah, but overseas HDD prices are falling on a $ per GB basis. There's also competition from SSD makers. So what must be happening is the decline in the Rand is offsetting this deflation and the restored manufacturing capacity.

The cheapest 3TB drive I could find was around R1500. So I waited for an external USB HDD special. Got a Seagate 3TB external from Game in place of the Verbatim which was sold out @R1099. I have used the drive as one of my internal storage drives. The drive inside the casing was a 7200 RPM ST3000DM001 which is now on special at Esquire for R1401 VAT incl. I did the same for a 2TB drive a the month before and paid R799 for that drive. (Also USB external) The couple of 100 rand's savings go towards the next IC or Game special. Soon I will have a pile of empty USB cases lying around, but it's still cheaper than any other internal only drive offerings I've seen.

    Screwdriver?

Hasn't Seagate taken over WD? If that is the case, then it is very possible that this can happen

Wd and seagate bought out every other drive manufacturer, so these two are the only two still standing.

    I don't think a screwdriver can turn a wd into a seagate

Seems only WD, Seagate and Toshiba still standing in manufacturing.

Oops! Sorry about that! It was a Seagate Expansion Desktop 3TB. Mondays don't agree with me. I was looking at the empty 2TB casing while typing.

Aaah, the exchange rate nemesis, ever favourably to retailers when "sharply" rising against the rand and never favourably to consumers when on the downturn.

Otherwise thanx and very plausible.*takes out the vaseline once more*
