    Default About Web Africa

So I'm seriously considering switching my current ISP and after reading though the ISP Discussions it seems that Web Africa is almost top on everyone's list.

Before switching however I'd just like to clear a few things up:

    1) Does this ISP offer a decent service for gamers? (My son would kill me if I didn't ask that before switching)
    2) Are users able to access their e-mail remotely? (I do a lot of traveling so I would need to be able to access my newest e-mail via the web)
    3) What is the standard mailbox size?

Firstly what option are you planning on going over to on WA (shaped or unshaped).
What account do you currently have (SAIX, or IS).

    1) For gaming, well it depends on what games your son plays and how much he plays, I use the WA SAIX unshaped account for gaming and it flies

2)WA do have a webmail option (http://www.webafrica.co.za/login/) Though I use my email address from my servers in the USA so I never bother with ISP accounts. Sorry

3)Sadly because of number two above, I'm not 100% sure. Though send them a mail at support@webafrica.co.za or phone them, Their support is one of the best I've encounterd in SA with regards to ISP's and they are very helpful

Arzy : I used WebAfrica for a long time before switching to MyWireless. They are a really great company

    1) Not sure. Never played games
    2) & 3) Why not just use GMail?

Arzy. Not to b a troll. but honestly stop wasting your time with the isp email acc's. I've not used a isp email since my old mweb days.
    Rather use gmail.
You get a few gigs of space for your mailbox. You get cool gtalk that integrates with it. and uber duberly it's free.

Also if you ever switch your isp to a new one then you dont have to change your mail addy.

If you want a gmail invite just pm me with a mail addy that i can send the invite to.

I'm also a bit of a WA fanboy, but I don't use their webmail myself. Why bother when you can get your own domain and email accounts for $1 a month?
    http://www.brinkster.com/Hosting/QuickMail.aspx
($10 per year for a domain)

WA is great for gaming (It's what I use it for mainly)

Jstrike cant speak for Arzy, but personally Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc accounts are something I stay away from like the plague.

These accounts are used for spamming so much that I have all these domains set to delete on receipt on all my servers, and email clients. There are one or two friends I have which I have added rules for but they have to contact me in other ways.

There are also quiet a few companies world wide that do this as well with regards to these "free accounts" so it can be a problem for some.

Lastly for personal use, I can maybe understand using these accounts, but for anyone who would use their email for business, I know I wouldn't suggest it, kinda destory's your credibilty if your using a free account no matter what your reasoning behind it.

I at this point dont know of any "major" ISP that does not have a webmail option, even most hosting companies provide them now free with accounts (granted maybe not in SA with the hosting side)

Of course thats my personal views and I know there are many others

Kalvaer : I see your point about the credibility, but as for the spam issue, Gmail has no real spam (Or rather, it sits out of your way in the spam folder). I have had it since day 1, and google have always made spam detection a priority

    1) Yes we have plenty of gamers using our service. AS Kalvaer pointed out unshaped is the best for all round gaming but for local gaming I think shaped is fine too. Unshaped better for stuff like WoW and other international MMPORGS.

    2) Yes, you have POP3, Imap or webmail

    3) Officially its 100mb per box, though we don't actually enforce limits agressively at this stage.

Gmail is a great idea as well, in case you relocate etc.

Oh I'm not talking about Gmail receiving spam, I do mean that there are thousands of users out there who use gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail to spam other people.

Unfortunately this means that most companies and so on have these domains set on autospam. There are quiet a few websites which now also refuse registration and so on, to any users using a "free" account.

Which is another reason I dont use these accounts for mail. I did however use my Gmail account as a storage folder for things I might need to access while visiting clients and always seem to forget to take with me.

As doobiwan mentioned though, its so damn cheap now days to get a email account hosted somewhere else other than your ISP and take it with you anywhere. (Other than Telkoms new email box scam), It might not be free, but it will be personalised and everyone will always know its you

EDIT: And there wamatt just goes to prove their customer service.. you didn't even have to go to them.. he came to you

Well then just too bad for them as they won't get my money or my custom in future or my recommendation to others ... sure that there are plenty of others interested though .
