Not possible. DCPs are protected with encryption. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital...DCP_encryption You don't think big Hollywood studios haven't thought about this yet?

    Where there's a will, there's a way.

No doubt the copies will be digitally watermarked in some way, so as to track down errant copies...

I hate to burst your bubble, Encryption is only as good as the people using it.

If someone inside a theatre gets the decryption Key then its all fairgame.

Did you even read the wikipedia page? The encryption is there to protect the movie from the idiots working at the cinema! Where do you think film scan releases come from??

No DCPs have ever been cracked, otherwise piratebay would be full of glorious 4k source copies of Prometheus. I'm not saying it aint possible, I'm just saying it hasn't been done, and if/when it's done then it sure as hell won't be in SA. We don't have projectionists that have the ability to reverse engineer a DCP playback station to get keys.

So what exactly are the advantages minus the 3D bs?

I'm not saying it will be done... but you claimed its Not Possible, and I just corrected you on that one. Its possible, it just hasn't been done yet.

I'm guessing you have a comprehension problem sometimes?

    Yeah.

I expect the movies to be "watermarked" so errant copies can be tracked down. Not worth that, because you'll lose your job & be probably extradited to America to have a merry frolicsome time with the RIAA et al in court...

Rather torrent it if you want to.

Besides, you really don't need 4k on a piddly computer monitor

Ster-Kinekor's problem (and Nu-Metro's) is not film quality or ticket prices -- it's us.... Or at least those of us who now regard it as their civil right to fiddle with their cellphones through movies. Overseas the decline in cinemagoing is attributed largely to this phenomenon. The problem is so bad in some countries that signal-jamming has even been suggested!

It's also going to take ages to download.

a 4k film would be pointless without a screen with enough pixels to take advantage of it

They've been busy with this conversion overseas for some time now.

Apparently 4K tvs are out in the wild, some places are running trials.
