Hmmm... Submitted both me and my wife's tax returns through eFiling this morning. At the end of our ITA34s we both received a note at the end stating that "Information declared that impacts this assessment" is "Married in community of property" set to "N", which is correct. Now, we both received a notification stating that we need to supply supporting documentation for our submissions and that an attachment at the end of the ITA34 will tell us which documentation. I'm assuming it's the proof of us being married out of community of property? Question is, why ask for it this year, seeing as we've been married for 5 years already?

So, should I only submit a copy of our marriage certificate, or copies of every single document, including income certificates (2 for each of us), medical aid certificates, retirement annuity certificates, proof of medical expenditure that wasn't covered by medical aid, etc? Any advice will be greatly appreciated...

Unless you are in receipt of investment (interest),rental income or there was a capital gains tax disposal the community of property should not affect the assessment outcome.

If supporting documents are requested it's always best to provide all - specifically the medical and retirement annuity fund certificates as SARS will in all probability disregard any expenditure for which supporting documents have not been provided.

How long does it take to finalise those?
It took them 4 weeks to sort their objection on mine last year. This year they have objected again so I guess end of July for me. That's 3 years running with objections and 3 years running my return has been identical

No investment, rental income or capital gains... It's quite odd that they decide to query both of us this year, as the amounts that are payable to us aren't absurd in any way (just over R3k each) and we only have the 2 deductions on our side - retirement annuity for me and medical aid for her.

So, next question: Regarding the medical aid proof, would the medical aid tax certificate suffice, seeing as it contains amounts for both the member contributions and the claims that weren't paid by the scheme? We've got receipts and proof of payments for just about all those claims and the amount I submitted was manually calculated by me (by drawing up an Excel file with date of expense, provider and amount, with a final sum at the end). The amount I calculated and submitted is actually less (almost by half) than what the medical aid tax certificate states. Would the Excel summary suffice or should I actually go ahead and scan in every single one of those receipts and upload it to SARS?

Oh - thanks for the quick response!

I would upload the IRP5 certficiates, RAF, medical aid tax certificate and the excel spreadsheet for now - perhaps add a covering letter stating that you have the receipts as reflected on the spreadsheet should same be required - also state that you have not uploaded same due to volume.

Hopefully SARS will contact you should the actual receipts be required. If they don't and disallow the expenses you will need to follow the objection route and attach all receipts.

    HTH and good luck!

Crappers. Started submitting the supporting documentation, but didn't realize you have to submit ALL in a single batch before selecting "Submit to SARS". I thought I had to do one at a time, so I started with marriage certificate for each of us while I scanned all the other tax certificates. So, now the upload function is disabled and I can't submit the rest of the supporting documentation. Here's hoping that they receive the documentation, tell me they need more and enable the upload functionality again.

Well - my dispute is still in hold.

I recon this is going to be like the previous time, I'll eventually have to contact the monitoring office to get anything done.
