So, basically this is the new bring back Lance thread after the last one got deleted?

Know what peeps? I think this a case of absence making the heart grow fonder. Even though Lance and I were more or less on the same page on most issues, dude was kind of confrontational and aggressive. Ok, so maybe there's a bit of pot calling the kettle black here, but hey, I've avoided getting banned for almost seven years now. Frankly, I don't remember him being all this popular back in the day or there being this much upset when he was first banned.

All I'm saying is how do we know if he were allowed back in it wouldn't just be more of the same from the oke?

Bear in mind I haven't bothered reading any of the threads in any sort of detail, so if I'm missing the boat a bit here... well, fcck it.

This latest hubbub was mostly about another oke, ClintX, who was banned, as far as some of us could guess, because he/she/it was accused of being Lance.

Or something along those lines. Then that whole thread got deleted, for no apparent reason.

Yes, I think we have established this, and not the basis for any of the queries, really. That some of you okes seem almost proud of the fact is a bit odd...

Yes, that they don't don't generally respond to public requests about their motives and behaviour, which is fine, as they have stated firmly that this is their policy, and they understandably have lives that exist outside of their role as forum-police. However, this does not stop any of us asking, if we are concerned, and to label perfectly reasonable requests as 'crying', is not particularly useful.

Bottom line, for me, these incidents erode a little my confidence in this site and how it operates. This is of no consequence to anyone but myself, and nor do I think my opinion really matters to anyone other than myself. Still, it's in my nature to try find out about things I wish to know.

Why this seems to be an issue of some sort to certain people, is very peculiar.

It's fact, as you've acknowledged yourself. So why bitch about something we as members have no power of whatsoever? This is not the first time complaints have been raised. I've also been guilty in the past of voicing my opinion.

copa you're an activist and that's cool. The thing is (perhaps kinda, sorta, ironically) mybb hasn't been an activist site for many years now. And, when it was, it wasn't some hippy, dippy grass roots movement. RPM and co made the decision somewhere along the line (I wasn't really paying attention) to steer the site towards being a news and discussion channel. And, frankly, I believe that if they hadn't mybb would no longer exist or at the very least be a very minor player on the SA internet. Hey MAD!

So, obviously I can't claim to have never gotten upset by a couple of what I saw as bad calls by the mods. There may have been the odd banning I protested against. But, ultimately I'm more than happy to go with the flow and let the mods do their thing. Because the mybb community isn't trying to achieve anything except be a community. We're not trying to create a better life for all or achieve a freer and fairer society. We hang out here to be informed, and have our voices heard, feel like we're part of something, make friends, argue and basically act like care free children. And, where you have care free children you need responsible adults. RPM and co have been running the show for a long time now and I think they can be trusted to keep on keeping on. Every now and then you hear a comment from some member about how they're worried about the direction moderation has been going of late. People have been saying that for years. As far as I can see, we've had a solid and dedicated base of moderators who although we'll see the odd bit of personality come through here and there actually haven't fccked the place up in anyway. Yeah ok, maybe TK but whatever, personally mybb is much more than a place to be a dick to people for me. Things change and evolve. TK is still there. It looks pretty much the same to me and the other 99.9999% of members as it always has. Which is to say a very minor but vocal minority. Love you guys - don't take it personally.

This might sound sycophantic (please RPM, I'd really like a Galaxy Tab) and it might grate against your sense of scepticism and justice and democracy and in the really real world I'd be right there with you (maybe... ok probably not, I've grown way to apathetic) but let's just establish and remember that this isn't the real world. This is a manufactured reality that allows us to be sceptical and voice our opinions and just be ridiculous and self-centred and arrogant and spiteful and callous... and you see what I mean. In the real democratic world most of that shyte doesn't fly. Because basically it's immature silliness. And basically for a good few years now the immature silliness mybb allows us to serve up on a daily basis has been a fairly significant and constant part of my life, sad as that probably is. I mean seriously, I lost interest in telecoms liberalisation or whatever ages ago. I'd been hoping no one would notice but I think it's fairly obvious.

So, anyway, listen even Libs turned into a real asset to mybb , so obviously the mods and management are doing a pretty good job of consulting each other and keeping each other in line. I don't see any reason to be concerned that mybb is going to change drastically for the worse any time in the foreseeable future. If I managed not to get banned those who have and do must have been seriously begging for it. I may question stuff from time to time but frankly I see no value in going to the wall over anything or rocking the boat other than for a bit of a laugh.

This is mybb and in as much as it's influence my thinking and even world view, nothing that's actually happened here has affected my life in any tangible way.

So, maybe lance lost something that was important to him. He's a grown up, there have to be consequences he knew what they were. Jammer vir jou boetie.

And sorry copa I realise that this great big steamy pile of rant I just deposited may seem like a bit of an attack, but it's not really. I appreciate you feel strongly about fairness and democracy, I'm just saying that strong feeling is misdirected. This is not a democracy and it wouldn't work if it was. Why worry about the odd thread or post that isn't very likely to matter in a day or a week. Or some poster who more than likely pissed all over our community by continuously ignoring the very basic rule of not being a complete *******. And as one of mybbs long serving *******s I think I can safely say that the lances of this world were guilty of being complete *******s.

Stop fccking with mybb is the basic message I'm trying to get across. It belongs to all of us in a sense but it's held in trust by RPM and co, because 100 billion opinions on who should be banned and 100 billion questions on why this or that was done would wreck the place.

Yes, in my opinion. I feel comfortable pointing out that mybb forums quite literally has world class moderation without any fear of being accused of currying favour because I honestly never have. I've always sort of kept my distance from the mods because I'm just naturally anti-authoritarian. Not in any idealistic sense. Just sort of in a bratty, fcck the police sort of sense.

And after almost 7 years of being a member here I really don't have a clue, or much interest either to be honest, as to how things are run behind the scenes. But for the significant part it all just works. It's not all entirely fair but it just wouldn't work if it was.

And in actuality, in the same way RPM seems to allow the mods a lot of leeway and discretion, the mods actually do allow us a lot of leeway. And, again, it works. We really do get away with a lot of shyte here. There truly is, in my opinion, way more freedom of speech on here than any other mainstream news channel in the country. Or at least in a format that isn't complete and utter, free for all, chaos.

It really is an amazing thing. And every time we bitch and moan about fairness and wah, wah, blah, blah we really are acting like spoilt children. Bog knows I've done it. If johnny get's a toy, I want a toy. O ffs be grateful you have so damn much in the first place.

And of course there needs to be a bit of dissent and input, there's room for democracy there, but seriously day after day of seeing the same thread petitioning to have some oke who showed our thing no real respect, reinstated, getting longer and longer is actually pretty offensive to me.
