Thread: Use Ubuntu Laptop as Wifi Hotspot

Default Use Ubuntu Laptop as Wifi Hotspot

    Hi.

I currently dual boot Windows and Ubuntu on my HP Pavilion DV7 laptop.

On Windows, I can easily "transform" my laptop into a wireless router for phones, tablets and other laptops connect to for an internet connection - through a simple program called Connectify.

Now, with Ubuntu being my preferred OS, I found that there is a function to create a wireless hotspot. Now none of my devices picks that up, but it works perfectly in windows. I never had any driver problems with my laptop and linux so I doubt its that.

    Any suggestions or alternatives?

    Thanks in advance!

Latest Ubuntu release has problems with some Intel cards.

Firstly Network Manager doesn't actually establish a hotspot in managed mode when you use its hotspot function, it instead establishes an ad-hoc mode peer. Since most phones and tablets can only see and connect to managed mode hotspots, it's useless.

To create a managed mode hotspot, you have to stop Network Manager, and install and manually run hostapd with a configuration file.

If that doesn't work, maybe your network card isn't properly supported - in that version of Ubuntu. Try a newer or older one?
