For the people reading it from Mobiles: Its about

    Serengeti safari lodge attacked

Arusha - Bandits attacked a lodge near Tanzania's fabled Serengeti National Park, killing its local manager and a Dutch tourist, the national parks authority said on Friday.

The attack took place on Wednesday and while parks officials did not elaborate on its circumstances, Tanzanian television said the bandits robbed several tourists.

"The tourist is from the Netherlands. He was killed the day before yesterday in a tented camp which is out of the Serengeti National Park," Pascal Shelutete, a spokesperson for the Tanzania national parks authority, told AFP.

"He was killed along with the assistant manager of the lodge who is a local Tanzanian," he added.

Tourism is a major source of foreign currencies for the eastern African country.

The national resources and interior ministers visited the site of the attack and extended their condolences to the tourist's widow, state television reported.

The Serengeti is known as the starting of the great migration, one of nature's most spectacular wonders which sees hundreds of thousands of wildebeest flock across to Kenya's Maasai Mara park every year.
.... and thanks for all the fish.

I spent some time in Tz recently and while we were at Arusha, there was a huge commotion with people everywhere and cops around. I asked our driver what it was about and he reckons it was an uprising relating to foreign land owners. They were trying to take over a farm owned by a settler. On the positive side, the police weren't taking nonsense from the perps. They had them bundled up in a matter of minutes.

This is actually a very sad story It happened at Ikoma, in the northern side of the Serengeti, but not in the national park. The national park is very safe to go through, as the security is very tight. I know the camp and the company very well as we make use of some of their properties, but have never booked that specific property before. Its really a big shock to all of us working in tourism, and being a ground handler for Tanzania, we are flooded with questions etc. The government issued a statement informing that this is a once off incident, and they have tighten security dramatically. I was just driving past that area a few weeks ago - so Im still in shock about everything that happened
After twelve years of therapy my psychiatrist said something that brought tears to my eyes. He said, No hablo ingles.

All this is, is a terrible story of two men dying in an attack which happens worldwide everyday. One tourist and one local so it is not like it was aimed specifically at the tourists. How many of these stories do you hear coming out of Tanzania?

Aim the hate at the perps people.
I've got to stop saying "how stupid can you be?"...........Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

I do not think so. The media mentioned both people who were killed. Also remember, countries like this depend on tourism for a large part of their GDP, so in that sense, yes, the tourist is seen as important.
