Thread: Domestic Servant Salary Review

  1. #1

    Question Domestic Servant Salary Review

June is review time for my domestic.

In the past I have given her the following with a 10% increase on salary and travel
    Monthly salary R 1 942.05
    Additional Travel R 332.75
    Deductions U.I.F. R -22.00
    Total monthly R 2 252.80

I, due to certain performance issues I am giving a 8% increase on salary and travel
    Monthly salary R 2 097.41
    Additional Travel R 359.37
    Deductions U.I.F. R 20.97
    Total monthly R 2 435.81

Normal house myself, wife and daughter, no special tasks etc just cleaning, washing ironing etc. Mon-Fri

I think increase of 8% is reasonable what do you give your domestic?

Hopefully between 25-50% increase. ( I have her for one day a week but we provide her accommodation) this all just depends if I get any

she will get an increase, she always does. I would just like to give her way more. We got her with the house. We did not want an domestic as its not a necessity. But she had nowhere to go and works for everybody in the neighbourhood. She asked if she could stay and she will help in the house for free. It was either that or a squatter camp.

I do pay her much more than minimum wage but she turned out to be a superstar. Our pets love her.

I would love to give her more than the 5% I might get

We pay R2,000 PM. She takes food and coffee from the kitchen, has her own room and bathroom + wall mounted TV.
We also lend her R100 here and there through the month which we never actually ask to get back.

She is a good worker and good with our kids. Been with us nearly 10 years now. Pretty much part of the family.

Very lucky. I've had mostly thieves for maids. I'd like to hire someone fulltime but after the drama I've had I wouldn't trust anyone. Where to start looking...?

We have stuff taken from time to time dude. It annoys us big time. Sugar, coffee, odd clothing item, toilet paper, washing powder... bare essentials.

We chat to her every now and again and it stops, but eventually starts again.
I don't think you can get away from it. They earn so little in the great scheme of things and often have families to support, so in a way we do understand why.
As long as it stays at relatively low levels, we just ignore it

Much as I love having a maid, I'm starting to have to reconsider whether I can actually afford one.

My maid has a bit of a sweet tooth, as well as liking the finer things (food wise), so I find the expensive food and sweets disappearing from my house when she's around... so its getting rather expensive having her unfortunately.

When our maid left my electricity, water and food/grocery bill dropped considerably.
Whatever you pay your maid always add R1000 on top of that for other unforseen "sundries".

Domestic workers must loathe the fact that I work from hom so there is little or no scope for them to steal !

Ours currently gets R3,000 5 days a week.. but we're only two, so the work load isn't too bad - but the 3 dogs tend to make a mess of the floors daily.

Her increase will be inline with what my SO gets.

Mine get's R180 a day, just once a week. The value of the stuff she breaks though... phew... Don't charger her because she's honest and it's always a mistake. Plus she's never ever stolen from me. But boy is it annoying.
