Thread: Mtn retentions

    Default Mtn retentions

Ok... I know this has probably been raised 8 million times in the past, but, I thought I might as well try and give it a go:

I upgraded on the 29th December 2010 to an htc desire hd on an anytime 300 mtn contract. I have been with mtn since 2005 and spend on average R1000 a month. Last week, I dropped my htc on a tar road. It smashed. Mtn quoted r3000 to fix it. I said no.

My question is do you think I could make a case to mtn retentions to upgrade early? I've currently served 18 months of my current contract. 6 months left. Earliest I can upgrade is in December. But, is there anyway to pay in and fast forward my contract till December so I can upgrade? I've spent over 20000 on the current contract,so, I've definitely paid off the htc desire. Do you think anyone at mtn retentions could help me out? Does mtn have a similar option to vodacom where ou can upgrade every 13 months if you spend over a certain amount of money every month ?

I'm struggling a little and don't want to buy a whole new phone now.

    Any advice will be awesome!!

If I can't get an early upgrade, would anyone know of a way to fix the desire hd cheaper? The touch screen still works perfectly. It's just that the top layer glass has cracked very badly. All touch points on the screen still work though and the display seems perfectly fine otherwise. Any ideas?

I do not understand why they would not allow it, Vodacom do IIRC.
I mean you are not asking to cancel or do anything dodgy you are just asking to upgrade early.
You are promising them more business.
Problem is getting hold of someone at MTN that can and will assist is the problem IMO

I think WRT to Vodacom you need to at least average R850 / pm on your phone bill before they even consider it.

Not sure about MTN but its worth a shot.

MTN willl take that decision on a case by case basis, so there is propbably not a hard and fast rule for them. It will go to the supervisor > manager etc as is needed depending on the time frame.

    From the MTN Website:

In the event of a customer wanting to upgrade prior to month 21, this request must be forwarded to a Supervisor or manager who must have delegated authority to approve early upgrades for a decision. For all Corporate accounts early upgrades can only be approved by the Regional Sales Manager, General Manager Direct Sales, Senior Manager Business Operations, General Manager Customer Services or the Corporate Operations Manager. (Read in conjunction with clause 21). The request must be accompanied by a financial motivation. No early upgrade is allowed if it has been granted previously. The upgrade delegation process is as follows:
    * Supervisor for upgrades in month 19-20
    * Retentions Manager for upgrades in month 18-20
    * Senior Manager for upgrades in month 16-20
    * General Manager for any other previous month.

The normal upgrade process is that a customer is eligible once per contract cycle. Prestige customers can earn an upgrade from the 1st day of the 13th month of their 24 month contract.

No early upgrades will be allowed as normal course of business. Should a request for an early upgrade be received from a customer, the details of this request should be forwarded to a Supervisor, Manager or Senior Manager for evaluation. Only managers that have been delegated on their “Delegation of authority document” will be allowed to authorize this. In such cases the reason for request should be carefully considered and must only be applied in the case of retaining a customer. A financial model must be completed.

You say you are 'struggling a little',yet you spend over R1000 a month on cellphone bills? WTF My advice is: Get your priorities right and sort out your finances and then worry about a top of the range cell.

It sounds like your digitizer is damaged. I had an issue with my LCD screen. Have tried to repair it myself but the DHD is not an easy phone to get to the screen but it's not impossible.
I managed to replaced the screen but damaged the very delicate digitizer in the process. I am currently waiting on my order for the digitizer.
You can buy the digitizer (~R180) or LCD (~R200) from ebay but I would suggest buying the LCD packaged with the digitizer (~R350) which makes replacing it much easier.

They normally send the tools needed with the screen, i.e. prying tool and screwdriver and you might need a hairdryer to melt the glue holding the screen.

you can google videos detailing replacing the screen for the DHD

The other day when I was speaking to the retentions department and asking to cancel my contract, they told me I only need to pay the percentage of the remaining contract time x handset fee. So if you have 6 months left and handset was say R3000, you only pay 6/24 * R3000 = R750. It seems that the monthly contract fee times remaining months falls away now. Then when your contract is cancelled, you can take out a new contract. Not sure if you can keep your old number though. I haven't done it yet as I still have some airtime left on my contract which I need to use up. Anyone else done something like this maybe?

Phoned mtn retentions earlier. They said I can't upgrade early and to cancel my contract would cost R5750. Ridic.

    Oh well.

I upgraded in January and contract was only "full term" by the end of June.

Call them and ask when you can upgrade. If I remember correctly there is even a space on their site where you can enter your number and you will then be informed if you can upgrade...

Normally you can upgrade 4 months before the end of your current contract but as stated above, just check when you're allowed to do so.

    Sooo....

I totally forgot I had MTN insurance. They are picking my phone up from my house, completely repairing it and sending it back to me.

I am insured against loss, theft and damage.

    Thought it was just theft.

    Yaaaay!!!

Excellent, justice served, MTN are idiots in this case, they could have secured a further 24 months.
