Thread: Telkom calls not routing to VoIP or ported numbers !!

  1. #1

Angry Telkom calls not routing to VoIP or ported numbers !!

Having issues with Telkom the last week. Calls made from Telkom land lines are not going through to newly assigned VoIP numbers or numbers that have been ported away from Telkom. !!

Based in KZN and it seems to be problamatic from 032..., 035... , 031... dial code areas. It is very intermittent.

Had a call from an IT company in Bloem today and they said they have been experiencing these faults for 2 weeks now.

Does anyone have any more info regarding this ? It's apparently a routing issue , that all the nodes have not been updated with all the new routing info. Dunno if this is BS , our if there is any truth behind it.

Who is the VoIP Provider, are you sure that the Porting Process is completed and that the Provider has the interconnects in place to allow inbound calls?

Telkom's has 7 DPSU regions so it can happen that calls from one of those regions (all Telkom 03 lines fall within the same region) towards a specific number range won't connect while they will from another region.

In terms of ported numbers, they need routing for the port prefix. E.g. If the port prefix is D555, then they'd need routes within each region for D555xxxxxxxxxx towards your VoIP provider.

I've experienced such routing issues from Telkom many years back, however, once we got it fixed, it remain fixed. It was never intermittent; just a case of incorrectly configured routing with brand new number ranges.

This is also not unique to Telkom. E.g. I had this issue from MTN in the Cape Region to my 023 number range a couple of weeks ago. Once we logged it with MTN they sorted it out quite quickly.

And we've experienced a similar thing with Vodacom as well, although it was within 24 hours of bringing into service a new interconnect link and, when we reported it, they fixed it in around 15 minutes.

So - from personal experience - I can tell you that, provided you've reported this to your VoIP provider, they should be able to resolve it in, at worst, a day or two.

This was my suspicion as well , but all calls worked perfectly fine then all of a sudden it stopped working.

Thats what the VoIP Provider said, that the new block of allocated VoIP numbers had not been configured properly.

But it does not explain howcome everything ( new voip numbers and ported numbers ) worked perfectly fine and then stopped allowing incomming Telkom land line calls. Yet all other networks and sources connect perfectly.

It has taken nearly a week to resolve the majority of the reported faults. Some issues are still not resolved.

Well, it sounds like an issue with their interconnect with Telkom... particularly if intermittent. If it's regional, it may be POIL specific (e.g. failure of or errors on one or more of the bearer circuit carrying the interconnect traffic in the KZN region).

But this is speculative. Issues of this nature tend to be quite technical and unique.

The real issue seems to be the time-frames for resolution.

If you're unhappy, perhaps its time to port...again.

Got notification from service provider today that Telkom has fixed all the reported faults... Lets hope so , wait and see.
