    I thought its basic that most people know the pro's and cons of using a free public Wi-Fi hotspot.

    just don't do anything private over an unsecured connection, https is your friend...

    Anything you send or receive on an unencrypted connection. Download Wireshark (packet sniffer) and follow a tcp stream - you'll get the idea. It is not just limited to text, but video, voice etc.
